Hey Henk! Hope you are enjoying Knysna??

Define a School?? I was looking to get upto 4, dependant on price? I really don't have space for more than 4 considering their full grown size! I'd really have to cut down on other feesh! I'm also trying to get a second tank past the wife at the mo, so we'll see how that develops?

    Cheers
    Big G!

Hey Rowland, what size? The full 8 inches? I'm looking for small ones that I can grow on. Can you post some pics and give me an idea of pricing?

    Cheers

    Sheesh Bru! They are nice!

More than I have to spend tho!

I've been offered one pair around 5-7cm for about R300 for the pair, but thought I'd see if there was any for a little less around these parts?

I hope you find a buyer tho! Pheew! They are Nice!

    Cheers

Well, It appears that I hadn't done enough homework on Discus, So I'm gonna leave them for the moment, unless / until I get a second tank set up!

I hadn't realised firstly just how much space a grown discus needs (10 Gallons/45L per fish) and also that young discus would need to be kept in a group (recommended that 6 minimum be kept) so I decided to go with my second option and get Rams! Cool little blighters!

Thanks to everyone who replied and assisted in my endeavour, but I'll put it on hold for now!

    Cheers

Hats off to you. Firstly having done research and secondly realising you won't be able to keep them optimally.
Too many hobbyists decide to follow their heart anyway and compromise on all levels.
You, however, now have something to aspire to

haha! yer too right! If I can get hold of some Heckels that look as good as yours in the future, I'll be a happy man!

Only problem is getting a second tank past the wife! lol! I struggled enough to get teh first 120L Boyu tank, and then the upgrade to the 315L Aquabest tank!

Doubt I'll get the 1.5m Boyu or Jebo tank past her tho!! May have stood a chance if they were not soooo expensive, but they do look more classy than the usual 4 panes of glass stuck together types! IMHO of course!

    Cheers

    Hi Guys,

A few points to point out. I agree fully with Rowland that you need to do your homework first before diving in and just buying some discus. So get your tanks set up correctly before your start so that you are not eventually disappointed.

I want to make some corrections though. Per adult discus you need 60-70 litres, this 45 litres per fish story is a fallacy!

Then the guy who offered you a pair of 6-7 cm discus also needs to be shot. If he is offering you a pair, it is impossible to sex them at that size and they do not pair off at that size, so if he is claiming they are a pair, he is taking you for a ride. He is selling a "pair" and means two fishes then we can perhaps excuse him.

But one thing I must warn you about and that is that there are many people out there claiming all sorts of things about their discus and you must make quite sure that your sources are reliable. Rowland's fishes are excellent, but not something for the beginner and they certainly need a large and well established tank.

A word of warning from someone that has seen so many potentially enthusiastic discus keepers burning their fingers permanently.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it was for 2 Discus, not a 'pair'!

    Sorry for the misdirection!
