Well, generally I think most people on here will say STAY AWAY from them. If people keep up the demand for them, the a$$holes will continue the practice.

if you want a unnatural looking fish then go for it.
I think that it is animal cruelty and nobody gets anything done to them for it.
rather go inject dye into your labrador to get the pretty colours, then see how the anit-cruelty people jump up & down.
Any lfs that stocks them should be shut down!!!!!!!
Dont buy them and create a market.

    My 2c too

I agree with everyone that I think it's a completely INHUMANE thing to do to fish... but let's look at it from another angle...

This is statistics quoted from another source...
The SA market goes through approximately half a million goldfish a year. That's half a million goldfish deaths a year... and 99.9% of the time the reason these goldfish are dying is because of the conditions they are kept in... because the SA market also goes through approximately 250k gold fish BOWLS a year.
If you do the maths on the SA market alone... 500 000 goldfish divided between 365 days means that there are +- 1300 deaths a day... sound a little far fetched, but bear with me.
There is just no ways that I can see 1300 fish being killed PER DAY due to tattooing... so I DOUBT there is half a mil glass fish dying a year due to the practise...

Yet we still allow people to have goldfish the way they do...

There are more gold-fish deaths than painted glass fish...!

I disagree 110% with the painted fish philosophy! I also disagree with keeping a gold fish in a fish bowl. I also disagree with keeping a pleco in a 40litre tank. I disagree with keeping Oscars in anything smaller than 1000litres. Get my drift here...?

Wow, I was also a bit shocked at this practice. I must admit I got them before knowin what they were, just didn't occur to me that, why would fish need to have such bright neon colourings, they look like they've been highlighted!!! I did voice my concerns to the LFS and they said they got them from a new supplier, never had them before, and wouldn't get them any more, other than that all the livestock I got from there have been awesome, health, and going strong. Will be oing back regularly to make sure they keep their word!!

They aren't the only ones. Parrot cichlids and Corydoras catfish are also subject to this practice, among some other fish.

When i did my rounds looking at fish to stock with my new tank i saw these fish and luckilky i did some research that evening to discover just what happens to them at first i thought it was a hoax and then well i realised it was the truth and was SHOCKED the problem is I dont think petshops will ever disclose what the fish actually are so people will easily buy them unknowingly. But its up to us to stop the practice no demand means they wont supply

I don't buy any painted fish...
Thing is they should eventually loose the colour...

The Oscars that you mention JesseG is called the blueberry Oscars...
Seen them once only... Didn't buy...

I also believe that this colouring of fish shortens the fish lifespan....

Lemon oscars are selectively bred to have those colours, no dyes are used. The only ones I've seen that are 'painted' are the ones that slayer mentioned - the blueberry ones. And they sold like hotcakes.

I recently went to a fish wholesaler here in pta , they import thousandsof fish per Day ! if there is a pet shop in pta I am sure the place I went to supplies them .
when I was there I saw the painted fish, in hundreds ! the shocking thing is that most of them swim side ways or upside down due to the dye , or they get diseases . usually the smaller ones take strain . the next day more then half were dead ! the rest were sold . the wholesalersimport more then double the amount wich they wish to sell to allow for deaths . its just not right .
at the same time parrot fish go through something similar and many people own them . I would never after I found out that they are in fact deformed due to cross breeding and that they are not regarded as a scientific species! . . .imagine a tattoo how it hurts , now imagine if you had no skin! putting a tattoo on your eye ball? not so fun is it .

    This is so sad :(
There's this nursery in bothasig which used to sell ink injected glassfish and parrot fish :( I was horrified the day I saw it. I complained so that all the customers could hear me and have never gone back.

If enough people voice their concerns to the owners of the shops that sell them, not to the poor student who is trying to make some extra moolah, and refuse to purchase ANYTHING from the LFS which does stock them until such time as they agree to no longer order them, there will not be as great a demand and therefore less will be sold. Yes unfortunately there will still be those people who do not know any better or who do not actually care but at least it'll make the shop owners think the next time they get the list of available fish from the wholesalers.

@Zoom - most of the deaths happen when they are being injected and just after, before they are even shipped unfortunately. It is a terrible practice I agree and why it is not yet totally banned is beyond me. I remember at one time that there was a link posted on this site where you could add your name to petition against them being a available in SA, not sure where it is now but perhaps we could revive it and see what happens.
