So finding lights for my boyu 550 is turning into a nightmare. I have managed to find a supplier .. 10 per box (ouch) at R80 per tube. That is for the

Osram Dulux L De Luxe 4 Pin Compact Fluorescent 24W

954 5400K Daylight

    Excellent colour rendition 90% accurate
    24W low energy consumption

    Long life

now I have always thought that a 865 from say philips would be better - but it seems like that is brochureware.

Anybody doing good plant growth under any of the osram 954 tubes be is T8,T5 or pll.

    Thanks Ferdie

So after hitting every place I could think, to phone or stop at, I could only get the Osram tubes. Been doing loads of searching and finally found a de site that was well stocked and reasonable in shipping and stock cost.

I order some tubes for my first fish tank (that is a 2007/8 aquah20 Ah600 - time to replace the lights I think ;-) and the some interesting looking full spectrum lights and then the other osram i.e. Sylvania.

The killer is shipping - but if I think of the time / petrol / phone calls I waisted to try and source it local ..

    So now the wait starts.

Yes indeed - but now I do have lights for two tanks for a good few years. (I hope) - trust me I was thinking about is after spending the money ... I know it was not the best deal but it sure was the simplest. Shipping used to be 22 euro .. now 31 euro for 1kg ... that is the real pain then again is is actually cheap .. if your are willing to do a counter 2 counter JHB to CT of 1 kg that will be R60 - R90 ? So R310 is not that bad.

If I wanted to replace the boyu 550's with the original white blue tubes - that is R200x2 at the LFS so no matter how I look at it, having branded tanks from china is expensive if they have none T5 or T8 lamps. Doing the LED thing - still not 100% ready it would seem.

The surprise packet will be Mr SARS ...

@f-fish here's a link I found that has some stats on the osram 945 tube and other similar tubes with spectrum graphs.
I used the translate button of chrome since it's in malay.

    Thanks for the link.

I have only seen them online .. but have not been actively looking for them since the tanks already have these lamps that I am now replacing. The price is about 3Euro .. each.

It is clear to me that SAPO can not read German.

    plltubes01.jpg

Good thing the the Germans know this ... my lights arrived in a 60x40x32xcm box ... stuffed with packaging.

Now the real question - do plants need the UV?

    Hi Ferdie,

    A number of things here:

    1. Next time you need lamps speak to me because my one German supplier does supply these, I will be landing a shipment from Germany with mainly foods but some equipment on this Friday, so sorry to dissappoint you (translation, moet my nie moer nie....).

    2. Correction on your comment: "It is clear to me that SAPO can not read German.", it should read "It is clear to me that SAPO can not read" Schluss.

    3. Then I do not know where this rumour about plants needing UV comes from, but I think it is a screw up by someone on the accursed internet. Plants do not need UV, as a matter of they actually hate UV, UV causes mutations and plants make red pigments to absorb UV so that it does not damage them. So where this absolute and utter bs (not brine shrimps) comes from I do not know, but at times a really despair about this complete and utter disinformation that is spread by the internet.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

he he he ... on point 1 .. hmm when you have your price list done let us know - yeah only thing that kills me is the shipping costs from Germany but the rest of the prices are typically < 1/2 of what we would pay in ZAR. 2. ...
    3. So I got the narva lamps, double the price of the sylvania, it is made in Germany not India and it does seem to be "brighter" and have a different take on light spectrum needed. See http://www.narva-bel.de/en/Worlds_of_Light/NARVA_BIO_vital_1284.html it has a UV component so I have done a mix of 1 narva tube and 1 sylvania in my ADA tank.

Thanks for the info on the UV .. I did wonder about that. Now see everybody rush and get a UV tube to make the red plants more red (cause nobody is happy with plants that are green if you can force them to be red).

Must say these PLL 2g11's are actually rather nice. I should have a good few lights now for the two tanks, but might need to invest in some 2g11 holders at some stage should I spread the 2g11 love.

    Lol ... darn google ;-)

So that is D-tank ... it was my first and is starting to show its age, I have by now removed the filter /lights / hinges and feeding flap .. so basically only have glass and the top as a cover and housing for the newly fitted LED 10Watt.

I do love the shape of the tank on a desk but man it always seems like I just can not find the correct sport for it with a full fishroom.

Are you still running the original lights ? They never really worked all the well for planted.
