I have 2 oscars, a red tiger and a golden osar, got both when they were small, about 5cm..about 2 months ago....now they are about 15cm and they are alway hungry!!! The eat once a week earthworms and on another day they eat chopped lamb kidneys..I also give them bloodworms, but they swallow the whole frozen block. I also give them pellets, but the mess they make in the water wile eating pellets is a worry to me...I have to do a 50 % water change every 2 weeks...Now , a question, can i plant live plants with them, I have 2 oscars, 2 terrors(one looks just like zuma..his head is a funny shape)2 greedy red parrots, 2 plescostomus and 4 bala sharks..o ja and 2 tin foil barbs......

I would like some plants but my LPS have about none....

just an advice abt blood worms, u should defrost b4 u give it to them..

rule of thumb with oscars and tin foils etc is that they'll eat / destroy ur plants :(

u could try ur luck though.. get some anubias or java fern.. these plants are slightly hardier than others and might last/ last longer :p

hi there, larch has had some good success keeping hornwort in his oscar tank.. chat to him about it..

also the hornwort will do wonders or oxygenating your water and eliminating large quantities of fish wastes, ammonia, nitrates, etc..

if you have a power failure, the hornwort will still produce oxygen in the tank as long as there is still a bit of light.. lots of benefits.. :)

oscars and plants dont go period!we may try and try and try but we'l never succeed.iv never had success feeding defrosted bloodworms to oscars their mouths are simply to big,so i just chuck in a block and by the time it hits the warm water its already falling apart and they just hoover it up.also i had a bad experience keeping oscars and a green terror(i now have a 1 eyed oscar).hope it works out for you.and i do a 50% waterchange twice a week.how big is your tank btw?

People tend to overfeed Oscars, and then they can actually grow that fast.

What size tank are you running there?

You dont need to do that it creates more of a mess, I give mine his bloodworm and ox heart frozen just like that out of the fridge no issues. As for plants it seems he does not touch the hornwarts I have in my tank.

Oscar's tend to grow like weed the first year and a half of their lives after that their growths tends to slow down as they mature. The more protein their diet consists of the faster they will grow as its the basic building blocks for any predatory fish.
