    Hi all

I am currently cycling my new (to me) 230L tank for my Oscar.
He will be joined by two plecos (Is one pleco better?)

My original intention was to have just the silica sand and a few rocks but at this stage it's looking a little stark.
I would like to add driftwood and a few plants.

    1. Do you have any advice on the best Oscar-proof plants to get?
    2. As I did not originally intend to have plants, I have not prepared the substrate - any workarounds that don't involve me starting the setup from scratch?

    Thanks once again

    Hi there.
    1) oscars and plants. Try plastic plants and tie them down to rocks woo etc. real plants wont last
    2) to prepare the soil you could but the tetra plant fert pellet that you can insert into your soil. or buy Dirks Duppels - liquid ferts.

But having said all that, these are no good in an Oscar tank. I have yet to see a fully plant Oscar and, but willing to be corrected.

I don't know if there is plants that can go with O's but when i tryed to put plants with my O's they just pulled them out and ripped them apart.

I would say have one Pleco. They are more messy than what they are clean. They also grow big.

I wouldn't bother, the O's will rip them apart, the best you might get away with is some wood and gravel for a substrate as the oscars will take to moving the substrate also around.

tank is too small for those fish...should min 270l for 1 oscar. now you are adding 2 plecos....those nitrates will skyrocket and then soon you will register ammonia and nitrite in the water because there isnt enough bacteria to process properly. then you will deal with HITH with oscars and the plecos swimming very agitatedly. get a bigger tank. or smaller fish. or 2 x eheim pro 3e filters with 50% water changes every third day.

Giant Valis and Amazon Swords. Get big pebbles and place them round the base of the plant so it can't be uprooted.

And yes a standard 4ft is not big enough for a single Oscar. I had a 1300lph and a 2000lph powerhead filter and I still battled with keeping Nitrates in check. Nevermind the depressed Oscar

The pleco will eat the swords.

I would try Java ferns tied to the wood. Tied well.

Drifting plants seem to be the easiest solution, if you want real plants.

All my plants are still intact, but my Oscars are still tiny, and I suspect it won't last forever.

And you stole my picture :) (Which I stole somewhere else, LOL)
