I got home this afternoon to find that a pair of orange chromides had dug a pit in the gravel and were seriously guarding it and chasing all the other fish away. Does this mean that they are going to spawn very soon and will they be successful in a community tank?

They very well might be breeding - however, for a spawn to be successful, you need a brackish (slightly salty) setup for the best results in breeding chromides. You'll find your eggs and fry will be a whole lot less susceptible to disease with a little salt in the water.

If you want to keep the fry, I suggest moving the chromides to a separate tank to spawn and raise their fry, so that the community fish have no chance of eating the babies.

I do have salt in the water. I have moved them to a separate tank and they are much happier. The community tank is also a lot happier!!
