This for sale at a second hand store.

    Tank specs:
    120x58x70 (487l)
    fully braced
    10mm glass
drilled and fitted for a sump
wooden canopy with ballasts and 3 tubes (marine grade)
glass looks scratch free and silicon looks good
metal stand is rust free and made from sturdy square tubing

    comes with:
    Tetratec canister
    couple of pumps
nifty looking magnetic glass cleaner with built-in thermometer

This for R2500. Is this a fair price?
Can anyone confirm if the canister is an ex 1200?

I would buy it even if it was just the tank and lights with stand.

Worth it, just make sure it doesn't leak. Nice canister filter!

check the canister filters media .. if it is shoddy you might be able to negotiate a better price - seems like a bit of an odds size tank ..

10 mm seems a bit thin for that height, then again you did say it has full bracing .. is the base a single 10 mm sheet with bottom bracing added?

That's making me a bit nervous. Apparently they saw the tank running before bringing it in. I am going there again tomorrow to check it out and then decide if I want to make them an offer.
Will check out the canister then as well.

If I bought this tank I would go discus or angels, perhaps a blackwater setup. Thinking about putting it in my DVD shop as a feature :)

Maybe see if they can fill the tank for you? Then you can have a look at it with water in it.

Sounds like a fair tank sould be safe as far as thickness is concered,
The drilled overflow (if thats the thing in the botton back right) looks like you will need to extend it to the water level high you want befor you put any water in it.
Make sure there are no scratches you can always resilicone if needed.
I would also replace the filter maerial in the canister anyway.

Is the canopy just sitting on top? Not fitting over the tank?

Main thing, I would say is, is the canister in good working order. No clips broken, all the pipes and fittings, good seal, spray bar, etc. That is what is making the price acceptable. The tank one can see is in good nick, but the 'drilled and fitted' I see as a negative. Are you going to use it and if not, how do one block it?

Would just hate to know what the original owner got for it!

I think its a good buy ad would go for it. Theres nothing wrong with the glass thickness. My 1500mm x 700mm x 800mm is all 10mm, braced at the top and bottom. I like the idea thats its a nice deep tank. Climb build some awsome structures.

    Hey Eugene

Are you going to run a sump on it or use the cannister filter? If the former, I would make you an offer for the cannister if you are not going to use it and if it is in working order.

Right, so I went there this morning to have a good look at the tank and noticed somethings that are making me wonder.

    1) the glass is 9 or 9,5mm. Only used a tape measure so I cant be sure of accuracy but its deffinately not 10mm
    2) the tank doesnt come with a sump
3)the overflow has been closed up and the tank ran with the canister (which turned out to be a ex700 and not a 1200 as I initially thought) and some internal filters

The glass being less than 10mm is making me cringe and that it didnt use the sump makes me wonder if the tank wasnt a botched attempt. It looks nice but I suspect there are quite a few hidden dragons.

Hmm - does sound a bit suspect ... problem with these things - you have no clue who made it, if it was new glass that was used. I hear you on the no sump thing - that is just weird. Now if you are willing to take a chance - I think that will make an awesome Paludarium ... fill with water 40 % ... get a small sump going - or even plumb it so that the canister feeds via the sump plug over a water feature put a glass lid on and you are done - but over them R1500 for the lot.

For what its worth i recently bought a 1.5 x 0.6 x 0.6 all 10mm glass, drilled tank with overflow and bracing, on a powder coated stand with cabinet, Eheim thermo cannister filter, hood, pH controller and CO2 diffuser all for R 1000-00!!!

Make cash crusaders an offer. They probably didnt pay more than R 750 for the lot. The tank is taking up floor space. How long has it been in their shop for. Whats the bet the dealer will be more than happy to make the sale.

    Good luck.

    Andrew

Meant to add, measure the thickness with a vernear (sp) you probably find it is 10mm glass. 9 or 9.5mm sounds a bit odd
