No Rory - some of those were sort of real Os's.. The only REAL OS that Microsloth ever had was DOS - sniff, sniff, sorry, those are tears of sentiment for the good old days when an OS could fit on a 128K floppy....

Try a MAN's OS try Linux - or stay with a LITTLE BOYS OS - Windows 7...

You may detect I have a small BIAS away from Microsloth :) :)

Have done system admin work for MacOS/OSX/etc, windows (3,NT,2000,xp,2003), linux (redhat, centos, fedora, RHEL, debian, ubuntu), IRIX, Solaris and unix as well as used a few others like gentoo, SuSE, PCLinuxOs, Mint, SunOS, etc.

Still remember getting a pc with *TWO* floppy drives so you could leave the OS floppy in while you had apps (yes you could fit quite a few on a floppy then) etc on the other (back in a time before the 286/386/486 thing). Back then your pc would come with a thick book about the "8086 Instruction Set" when you bought it ;)

That said I think windows 2000 was probably the first "good" OS from MS. XP was just a bit friendlier and a bit of an update. Vista is terrible (SP1 makes it bearable). Windows7 really is good.

You guys are showing your age if you REMEMBER using the floppys!

Needless to say.. my first pc I had was a 286... I was really 'kiff' with my windows 3.1... AND I could fit about 10 of my games onto one STIFFY drive!

Haha, I think I had about 20 games on a floppy :p That's progress for you...
    Floppy: 20 games
    Stiffy: 10 games
    CD: .5 - 1 game
    DVD: .25 - 1 game

I remember how red alert was like amazing when you ran it under win 95 instead of dos because it could do 1024x768 ;) One of my favourite games of all time. (Also at the time it took something like 23 stiffy drives to install windows, and it was quite likely one of them was corrupted)

Hey Windows7 isn't bad at all.

That being said it copied so many things from OSX that it actually pushed me towards a full Mac environment at home as well, not just at the office.

Will run the Win7 box until it dies (June 2010?) and then probably not bother after that.

Zafgak = DOS was all fine and dandy, in the days when we didn't have multimedia and such, but in the modern world it simply wouldn't fit.

OSX = The Best *nix distribution!

But does anybody know why they brought out windows 7? To replace Vista which didn't work and windows 7 is still to new there is still a lot of bugs in it. Windows 2000 is still the best but all the anti v programs are being updated only for XP.

Windows 7 is yet another OS to make MONEY - that is the driving reason behind it. Windows 7 works, the main problem I have found is that there are no drivers available..

Oh so is it true that MS pulled vista off the market because it was giving to many problems. i have seen all the new laptops come with vista preinstaled and XP on disc?

Err No... Windows 7 is way more stable, to such an extent, that a lot of the IT chaps dump vista and run Windows 7 Beta.

Was Windows 7 brought forward to cover MS's err... (No nice word comes to mind) yes..

By the way XP is Windows 2000 update/ rollup call it what you want. :) Hence the incremental number version. 2000 horrible memory management. That's your hardrive light not the powerlight on below. I think they tried to run everything off the pagefile. Horrible stuff. You also forget its much unloved home version ME, which was a total disaster. That wasnt on the same kernel though.

    2000 is NT5.0
    XP is NT5.1

    Vista is NT6.0 (New kernel)
    Windows 7 is NT6.1

    Ans so it will continue

    Windows 7 will do well.
