    @Rainstorm

    Is that a wild pigeon?
    Or domestic?

    I think it's a rock pigeon - fell out of his nest on Wed last week. He was supposed to go to FreeMe Wildlife but my mom kept on finding excuses. One of the eggs in the nest also fell out and got smashed

    It takes a lot of dedication to hand raise baby birds
    I used to have show pigeons many many years ago.

    Yeah it does, I've hand-raised lots of wild baby birds and released most of them back into the wild - doing this since I was around 11 years old (38 now). I've also raised 3 baby yellow cockatiels too. End result is rewarding to watch them grow feathers, learn to flap and then fly. The easier part is when the wild ones learn that you're only trying to help them survive and then they learn to feed from you every time they are hungry.

    Stinky hobbles towards me, squeaking and chirping when he wants food, with both wings open. This is the first time I've raised a wild pigeon so it was a learning curve how to feed it without forcing his soft beak open - now I've found a way to get him to open his mouth with my hand cupped over his eyes and he just opens his mouth for the food in the syringe (I"m trying to mimic the mother in nature - makes it a lot easier for wildlife rehabilitation).

    I'm really hoping he will go to FreeMe Wildlife soon as I know they will provide the proper care, nutrition and they have great rehabilitation facilities to release the animals back into the wild once they are big enough to leave. The only reason why we can't keep him here is that our dogs will kill him - they are hunters by nature so yeah it will be a problem keeping Stinky here.

    I had a couple of snakes until fairly recently.
    I also used to catch indigenous snakes on permit for Fitzimmons Snake Park in Durban, as well as the National Museum and National Zoo in Pretoria.
    Herpetology was one of my passions.

    I have raised 11 barn owls, with 1 imprinting on me, becoming extremely tame.
    We built it a nest box for it in a large mango tree at our front door, and he would come when I held out my arm and whistled.
    I did that a few times when we had visitors, and he would swoop down and land on my arm.
    It was quite a conversation piece.

    The farm workers, being very superstitious, gave me the name of "imehlo eskhova" which means eyes of the owl, as they thought the owls were spying for me.
    THat I was catching all manner of snakes also strengthened their superstitious beliefs that I has assisted by the wild animals.

    We also raised a duiker as well as a klipspringer.
    The klipspringer would play with our dogs, and they would chase each other around the garden.
    He grew up and became quite aggressive, headbutting the dogs and us, so my Dad sent him to the Johannesburg zoo, as he would not have been able to survive in the wild.
    Guinea fowl, various francolin, hedgehogs, as well as 2 serval round off our menagerie, unless we count the old elephant bull that would eat marulas and then half stand half lie against the tree trunk, snoring and farting.
    He was not tame, but never posed a threat to us. My Dad sent 2 gardeners to chase him out of the yard once, and he slowly trotted off, farting with each step.

    @Pezulu ...that's awesome..

    I love wildlife.. would have a Zoo if i could..

    The owls have a special place .. love them
    We have a number of the Eagle Owls in our area, not tame but they do nest on the trees at the top of my property on the koppie so they around all the time.
    Some are huge.... love it when they sit on my roof and call for each other

    Not long ago, my dogs were barking away by my front door and as much as i called wouldnt shut up and i started hearing screeching sounds
    Went and have a look and three babies were sitting on my gate screeching for food while mother owl was threatening the dogs quite viciously...

    Funny part was i dont think they wanted to harm her, they were actually calling me as they do when there are snakes around
    I would love to have a tame one.. but then its such a great feeling to see them fly around.. they best left alone...
