hi, fin rot and ick would usually be more obvious?
my silver dollar has developed a funny growth on his snout and his dorsal fin is a bit raggedy.

water parameters are normal - the symptoms have been there for about 4 days, haven't changed.

@uni, welcome to the forum... Firstly if it was fin rot you would notice white patches on or around the edges of the fin, and from the picture I'm not seeing that. As for ick or white spot there are little white raised spots that stick out of the skin, and I'm not seeing that either. You say that the water parameters are normal, what is normal? It seems like it could be an injury from fighting with another tank mate, or the other thing it could be is water quality... When last did you do a water change? I cant seem to be able to access the 2nd picture.

    Hi and welcome.

The photo is not clear, but I think I can see some white spots on the body.
Go to your lfs, they will have a proprietary treatment that will clear it. Ich, or similar parasitic infections are usually quite easy to treat.

As Skye1 says though, the disease could be a result of underlying water problems. How often do you do a water change?
I find that fresh water and frequent water changes are the key to healthy fish.

his body is fine and normal - the picture is rather dodge as my glass is not clean - but its this bump/spot on this "nose" that i'm most concerned about. We don't do very frequent water changes, once a month we do a big water change, in between only small ones (10%) - we test with those drips and test strips; amonia - nitrates - ph all normal - had a ammonia spike this morning. did a 50% water change.

Thought I saw some bumps on the body - must have been the dirty glass.

From the 2nd photo it looks like the fish has scraped its nose. I would use an anti-fungal/anti-bacterial treatment just in case.

10% once a week should be ok, with a big change once a month.
As long as you monitor your parameters and act accordingly if Nitrates go up, you should be ok.

    Hi and welcome @uni.

Are there any sharp ornaments in the tank, rocks with sharp edges ect?? Up the water changes for sure. Depending on the volume of your tank. What is the tank size, what other fish are kept with this guy?

Hi Hein. Yeah there are rocks in the tank and 2 of their tank mates are sun cats so sometimes there are bruises and stuff, generally the cat fish are only out at night and there's not much around to startle them.
    tank mates:
    2x sun cats
    2 golden gouramis
    2 dwarf gourami
    1x pleco
    1x CAE

    tank size:
    about 500L

    Hi uni

Okay they will get startle them at night, please be careful with those sharp rocks if they do catch a fright they generally rush off and bump into any and everything.

You definitely need to boost your water changes on this tank. IMO I would recommend atleast 2 waterchanges a week consistant of 25%. HTH as for the bump on the nose get some anti fungus med as the previous members said.

Uhm...? How many Dollars do you have? They are shoaling fish and need to be in groups of at least 6+ to feel secure in their suroundings... Your tank is by no way overstocked(If you have good filtration...),so weekly 10 percenters should be fine..

Often Silver Dollars tend to "dash" around if they dont feel secure i n a large shoal - guess this is what happened to this dude....

we started off with 5 of them - over the years they've dwindled down to the last 2. been keeping an eye on them and i think it's definitely more like a bruise, it's not growing or changing those he does seem to be rubbing his nose up against the glass quite a bit.
I've noticed after the last fish loss they have become quite skittish

@uni, I agree with @hein24, they are very "skittish" fish and tend to dart around when they feel there is a threat. My Bala Shark is the same, my mom went near the tank the other day with a top with orange flowers on, and my poor Bala did his nut. He kept leaping out of the tank and hitting the glass and it was only when my mom moved away that he sorta settled down. It could be that they are getting night scares, even if lightning strikes at night could cause them to run into things in a dash to get away. Unless it gets a lot worse, I would leave well enough alone. Maybe get a few more companions I'm sure that would help a huge stack. HTH
