    Hey guys

Anyone got names of non-jumpers that I can look at for my open top tank? Just names are great and I'll research them on the net. Thanks

This is possibly a controversial one Lowflyer - I have found that almost any fish will attempt to jump if they are not happy in the tank. On the flip side - some tend to jump more than others, and a nice way to counter that is to actually have them in a bigger school or add more plants or make sure the water parameters are 100% etc.

What is the size of this open tank and what type of fish are looking for? Maybe a better way to do this - you figure what fish you would like to keep (# of fish and a bit more detail - decor, plants and filtration) and members can comment if they think this will work or not.

    Makes sense f-fish.

    Tank dimensions 450x450x400(h)

    Filtration - Canister filter
    Eheim internal filter

    Substrate - Pool filter sand

Lighting - thinking of buying one of those Boyu clip on side lamps. maybe 2

I wasn't really keen of putting plants in because I battle to keep them growing very well, but I might put two or three amazon swords in, and a floating plant.

So here is what works for me .. your success might be different.

Plants: in a thank that high - add some driftwood and get moss, java fern, anubia etc, swords are good - maybe some vallis.
Fish: most community fish should do ok - hornwort will help to create a cover. Currently most of my live breeder tanks are open - with water level up to a 1cm from the brim. I have found that surface agitation (i.e. non smooth water surface) seems to create a false sealing - seems to keep fish in the tank. Other fish I currently have in open tanks include several breeds of danios (but these do jump if it gets over crowded or the tank is species specific - in the community they seem to stay put) - betta's (again a single male will jump to get to females if he can see them) mine are part of the community tank 6 betta's seem to work) Neon, rummy nose, SAE, Angle, OTTO, corries, convicts and kribs all seem ok for me.

Maybe a different approach would be to have a glass sheet that you put on the tank when you introduce the new fish - let them make the tank a home and then you can remove it once they are comfortable and less threatened.

Good luck - let us know what works for you in the end.

@Tank master - just searched google now, hahahahahahahahaha, but they do climb.

@f-fish - Thanks for taking an interest in helping me out. Gonna hopefully build the tank today and still thinking about the substrate and lighting. I like the black substrate, but it's expensive. Are there any black alternatives to the gravel available at the lfs. And what do you think about those clip on lights by boyu

Hey . . I had to leave my work aside now when I got a notification on my bb. .

I am doing the exact same thing. Open top 30cm cube tank, black silicone, black substrate, and a boyu clip on light. . . I am buying a piece of perspex to cover the top up. Maybe you can get your glass company to cut you up a 2mm thick piece as a cover?

Haha, I took notifications off my bb..

Sounds like you got a cool little setup there. I bought the Boyu light today and a few packets of black gravel.

Glued the tank together tonight. Looking awesome :). Gonna fill it up tomorrow evening and leave it for a couple of days to see that all is safe and secure. I've been thinking about stocking. How do you guys reckon an Amazon setup would do in this size tank?

    Hey!

I had to change my plans with regards to my tank size. I had to make hardware
considerations so my tank is going to be 45X30X30 ... Same flourite black, diy co2 and some other stuff...

Please post some pics when you can. Its always nice to see how easy it is to build a tank.

why don't you plant it well? PfP and PFS? DIY co2?.

    Regards

I'll try get some pics up, I didn't take pics of the process, but was lank easy. My father used to build tanks as a sideline, so the silicone is really neat too.

BTW, what is a co2? And how do I DIY one? If you could give me a link, Tankmaster, that's be great. Your tank size sounds cool

CO2 is carbondioxide. I'm on bb now but I will post a link later. I will explain why to use co2 etc...unless @Slojo can help out?

Yeah, I placed an order for glass. I will be making the tank on saturday.

I still think apple snails are the best non jumpers lol

    I'm attempting uploading some pics.

    Eheim internal filter:

    Boyu light:

Two pics of the tank, notice the elastic bands, prefered over tape:

The pics don't give justice to the size of the tank:)

Oh, I forgot. We did use masking tape to keep the glue in the corners nice and neat

    Sorry for replying only now.
With DIY CO2 one of the important factors is to never run out of CO2.Rather run two bottles(make one every week)
Another is the CO2 Diffuser. It must be as close as 100% effective as you can get.
For a tank that size you will need to produce 8 - 10 bubbles of CO2 Per Minute(1 Bubble Per Minute for every 10 liters)

I saw some really beautiful specimens of Blue Rams at the LFS today. But they are from the same batch of eggs, I want to get one and try get another one from another LFS

    Hi Lowflyer

Looking good and its always more fun knowing you build it. Did you decide on fish yet?(my bad) Rams.
Does'nt the rubber bands move the glass out of place?
Asking because tape only holds it in place but bands will put some force on it, so very easy to let it go skew?

The rubber bands held it in place very nicely hey. didn't put it out of place at all.

And thanks. Getting the stand back this week, so will be up by next week.

I was thinking of an amazon biotope, but thinking differently now.

I want something that is easy to maintain. So maybe a community tank with easy going fish would be cool. Not sure yet
