bought my tank 2nd hand so i have no idea how old the heater (150w sera) is.

the noise is hard to describe, it kind of sounds like an electrical whirring/buzzing noise. it's not constant but the frequency is increasing.

the heater still works well, water is at an even 26degC.

time for a new one? or is this normal?

There is something wrong with the heater it could be the thermostat or a loose connection. Buy yourself rather a new heater. You dont want to cook ur fish

A radio is suppose to make a noise, if it is silent its broken.
A tv is suppose to show pictures, if it doesnt it is broken.

If a radio starts showing pictures, it is also broken... Or possessed.

A heater is suppose to heat. If it does anything other than just heat, then I would worry.

I agree, rather change the heater if you sure it is the heater making noise.

You dont want to fry your fish as Happy Fish mentioned

Not familiar with the Sera heaters.... Does it have little coil heating springs that heat up inside little glass rods at the bottom end of the Heater? These sometimes do make a buzzing noise as they heat up and "rattle"against the glass rods....nothing wrong with thar - if however your heating element is like coild wrapped round a ceramic core and its buzzing - I would be a bit worried...
