I am very new to planted tanks and would like to know if anyone has used a mix of C02 and Nitrogen (suremix) in a planted tank successfully. It might seem like a strange question but I have a "suremix" bottle which is usually used for beer dispensing so it will save me the expense of buyng a new C02 bottle if suremix will work. I cant fill the bottle with C02 - tried asking already. Any info would be helpful.

I'm not much of an expert on this, but I think it depends on what the current nitrate levels are in your tank? If you're following a estimative index dosing regime, you could possibly leave or the nitrate component(saltpeter) component, but do measure the nitrate level whilst using your mix to ascertain how much is absorbed in the water. If this all sounds like gibberish, rather refill with pure CO2:)

Don't know what the concentration of nitrogen is, but you'll probably kill your fish in the process

Would nitrogen kill fish? I would have thought that an excess of CO2 would be more likely to be toxic? I'm clueless with chemistry, thus my questions.

an excess of nitrogen or C02 will certainly kill fish but I dont have any fish in the tank yet so that isnt a major concern yet. The ratio of C02 to Nitrogen is 80/20, I think it may be possible that a small amount of nitrogen may be beneficial so I am going ahead with it and I will let you know how it goes.
Point taken about the nitrate levels Broder.

It would cause asphyxiation if the levels are too high, the air we breathe contains about 80% N and 20% O2 (from memory), adding gases to water may displace the O2 disolved in water and cause hypoxia.

No2 is the end product of the nitrogen cycle and are harmless (ammonia - Nitrites - Nitrates - Harmless Nitrogen Gas)
Your plants will love the addition of extra Co2

NO2 is nitrite which is not harmless, nitrites turn to nitrates NO3 which is also not harmless, but less toxic than nitrites, nitrates are converted to nitrogen N gas by bacteria that live under anaerobic conditions that you are unlikely to find in a freshwater tank. We remove nitrates from the tank through waterchanges.

Ok, so the formular for nitrogen gas is actually N2 (my bad)
Im sure nothing would happen other than the plants loving the cocktail

In natural bodies of water, excess nitrogen in the form of ammonia, NO2 and NO3 can cause algal blooms which deplete water of oxygen. This can result in fish death. The gas is harmless though as far as I know.
