    Hi all,

Just pop in to say hi, still new and hope to be able to start learning from you guys. Do have a 120l aquarium and intend to keep some Oscars, maybe 4. Please give me your ideas.:blink1:

Welcome to TASA, 120 litre tank might be a bit small for 4 fully grown oscars. What you might want to do is get 4 small ones from the pet shop and agree that you will be returning 2.

Yes a 120 might be enough for maybe one oscar. But the oscar guys might be of better help.

there's a advert that goes,"start with what you hope for" i cant remember the rest but anyway the same holds true for your fishkeeping.if you hope to keep oscars then hope to get a large enough tank so hopefully they wont outgrow it in 6 months and you end up with multiple problems and possible multiple dead fish.i think we all wish to have large tanks no matter what fish we keeping because it simply looks better IMO but when it comes to oscars and other large growing fish it becomes less wishfull thinking and more an imperative if we wish to see the fish to their full potential.i applaud your choice of fish oscars are just about the best i'd say, just do a little more research on them first before you take the plunge, ask some more questions on the site, there are quite few members who keep them and plenty of threads dealing with them.the 250l a oscar sounds great and probably wouldnt hurt but dont feel bad if you cant offer it there are very few who do including me it doesnt mean you cant work around it,oscars arent shoaling fish you dont need 4 and maybe try get a bigger tank first and try 2 or another largish cichlid a little less robust like a pair of deacons or firemouths.

whats your current filtration like.also bear in mind oscars and plecos eat a lot poop alot, grow a lot and your pleco will probably end up bigger than your oscar.

@CRH.... it's not about the filtration being adequate, it's about the size of the tank. A fully grown oscar, or even a half grown oscar, needs SPACE.

Don't want to be harsh on you... please take this where it is coming from.

If your tank is not at least a 4 foot (i.e 1.2m long) with a minimum of 250litres of water, and a filtration flow of about 1200litres per hour through an external canister or sump, don't get an oscar.

The above tank size and specs is for ONE OSCAR. 2 would need a bigger tank. 2 + Pleco will need an even bigger tank.

If your tank is 120l, I'm guessing it's about 3 foot. This is FAR to small for 1 Oscar.

Hi CRH. It sounds like you're about to rip your hair out - LOL I'm laughing because we have all felt that frustration at some point. There is so much info available and a lot of the advice conflicts with what you have read before. I know when I was researching requirements for Oscars it seemed like every time I read how much space was needed it was double what I'd read before until eventually it seems like you need nothing smaller than a river.

So, lets start at the beginning... You say your tank is 120l. What are the actual dimensions of your tank? When your oscar is fully grown it will at least need to be able to turn around comfortably. Oscars can grow to 30cm long.

At 120L, you are already pushing it for 1 oscar. As oscar freak says, oscars produce a lot of waste. Even if your filtration is very good, the nitrates will build up so you will have to do plenty of large water changes to maintain the water quality. If you're prepared to do that, there's no problem - for 1 oscar.
