    Hi All,

I am fairly new into fish keeping. Have just started up a tank- 1.5metre by 500 by 500. been cycling it for the last week now- pennplax cannister 1500.

Would like to know when can i start dropping fish in, and what process to follow. I was looking at putting in Malawi's and some Cichlids with a few tropical fish that will live with them.
i have read the article posted- nitrogen cycle.

    thanks for your help.

Welcome - hope you enjoy it here.

I would suggest that you decide on what you want to keep, and then get the water parameters such as pH and hardness to levels that will suite the fish. Some fish require different parameters and would not be happy if their needs are not met. You also have the problem that some fish just don’t do well together in the same tank, for example an large aggressive cichlid species with guppies. The guppies will soon become food.

    Hi Kap - Welcome Home
What area are you in ?
Cape water is soft pH low
Highveld water is Hard pH high

So South Americans for the Cape and Africans for the Highveld
this is a general rule only..

hi and welcome to tasa! Have a look at some of the members setups and get an idea of what fish you want to keep first.

    hi,
    Thanks alot to all,

i shall do further research before adding fish in....
looks like Malawis at this stage.
    i am in Gauteng.
    Let see how it goes.

BTW i heard the blue light tube is not good for malawis is that true?
i currently have a blue and white tube in the tank.

    thanks again
