    Morning all,

I started a community tank about 3 months ago and have 7 guppies included in a mix of platys, mollies, tetras, etc.

Last week one of the guppies produced a batch of fry (around 30 - the little ones are difficult to count!). Most of them were promptly made into lunch by the tetras, but around 5 have survived and are living in-between the plants.

This morning I see that there is another batch of around 30 that have hatched and are also all hiding in the undergrowth where the tetras can't get to them, so looks like survival rate will be better.
To top it off, it looks like there is a 3rd one about to produce fry!

So, my questions are like this:
    1. Will they just keep breeding? At this rate the tank will be over-stocked in no time at all. Or do they have natural regulator that will prevent breeding when the tank gets too full?
    2. If they do not self regulate, then what to do with the extra fish?

    Thanks,
    Dale

What size tank are the guppies in?
What number of fish are already in the tank?
What do you run the temperature of the tank at?
How heavily planted is the tank?

Guppies will generally breed if conditions in the tank are ideal, irrespective of the number of fish already in the tank.
Unless the fry are predated on, there is also no way that the number of fry is regulated.
You could try selling out of hand, or approaching a LFS in your area to see whether they are willing to take livestock off your hands.

What size tank are the guppies in?
    80 litres

What number of fish are already in the tank?
    26 in total. 7 guppies, 3 mollies, 4 platys, 2 Cory cat, 6 columbian tetras, 4 danios.
I am aware that it's probably too many already (from looking at online stocking calculators), but that was the mix I was advised by the pet store and didn't know any better at the time!

What do you run the temperature of the tank at?
    Between 26.5 and 27

How heavily planted is the tank?
not very - see pic below. the fry all hide in the bottom of the hornwort on the right of the picture.
Also, there were some fry drifting around at the top and generally looking like tetra food, so I scooped them up and got a little plastic breeding tank, so at least some should survive.

You could try selling out of hand, or approaching a LFS in your area to see whether they are willing to take livestock off your hands.
    Thanks, will approach LFS

As @Pezulu says, what size is the tank?
Do you have a 2nd tank to grow the fry on in?

    Guppies usually just keep breeding.
So you will need to find someone to take the youngsters off your hands. They are a popular fish, and the lfs will possibly take some from you. But eventually you will probably find it difficult to move them on

Edit: I see you have posted while I was typing my response ;)

hmmmm, so is this how multiple tank syndrome develops? :)

    Thanks for the replies.
Sounds like male / female separation is going to be the answer here.

Yup, and you will end up like I did at one point with all sorts of tanks and even plastic containers as grow out tanks all over the house.

In a community tank, most fry will get eaten. A few may survive, but it shouldn't get out of control.
If you are finding that there are too many fish in the tank, perhaps "male only" is an option.
