Hey Guys, just wanted to introduce myself...

The name is Kribs from Cape Town...been keeping tropical fish on and off for about 12 years....

Recently decided to get into breeding fish....not as easy as I thought.
I have had large and small tanks but recently i've decided to go small again but with better quality tanks. My current setup is a Jebo R338(12 gallon)...yeah its tiny i know...but i didnt want to spend all that cash immediately. Investigating with local fish shops on a price for a Juwel Record 70. Heard they are really pricey , but very good quality.

Right.... first set of fish i'm attempting to breed are Kribensis...
(Note to self) My tank is too small....
I have a really dumpy aggressive female and managed to get hold of a male this afternoon(seems to be a drought on males atm), although he is a little small, I hope he will do.

I 've put the female in a breeding net just for the moment so the male can find his way in the new tank. I'm almost positive she is going to harass him when she gets loose . And once again..I know the tanks is too small, but its all i've got for the moment. Oh and there is one Bronze cory in the tank(the janitor)

    keep you guys posted..

    Update on Tank and Kribensis

Right...so Jungle aquatics in jhb has mentioned that only the Juwel Rekord 60 is available in south africa as far as the rekord range is concerned. The Juwel Rekord 60 is a 54 litre Measurements: 61 x 31 x 36 cm. They Quoted me R1500..yes its expensive , but its a high quality tank from Germany, comes with filter, heater, pump, light and a 5 year guarantee. Considering this one for breeding my Kribs in.

The male and female have seem to paired off nicely. Interesting dance they do together :smile1:. The Bronze Kory is getting hammered though, wondering if I should add 2 Danio's just to relieve the tension.

Any advice on breeding Kribs or the Juwel Rekord 60 tanks is more than welcome.

i would recommend getting 2ft glass tanks instead for breeding, a Juwel tank would be perfect for display purposes. Also consider that the baby kribs would need a grow out tank

Juwel tanks look real smart, but in my opinion they are not worth the price and are not as "high quality" as you may think. For much the same price, you can have a tank custom build, stand welded and canopy and cabinet made from solid wood.

Welcome to TASA Kribs and gaf7808! :D

Kribs if you are planning to breed the Kribs I would suggest putting them in a tank by themselves or else any other tankmates will get a beating and a half! Kribs are extremely agressive when they have young to protect and you don't want to be losing your babies to other tank mates. No need to get a Juwel tank to use for breeding purposes IMO - I agree with speedz - you can get a larger tank which may not look as good but will serve the purpose better and for the same price.

Kribs - A 60l glass tank should set you back about R200, A Sponge filter about R120-00
A heater about R250-00 and a pump at R30 - so all in about R600 That leaves a lot for Breeders, Food, Electricity.

Now your Kribs are gonna have +- 30 babies every 14 days so every 2 weeks you gonna need another 60l tank complete, until you have about 12 tanks minimum, as the growout is gonna be in the region of 24 weeks before you can sell.

If you overcrowd the babies they will stunt, so the other tanks are a must.

in 24 weeks you gonna have +- 360 kribs to sell - I hope you have a market for them.

    what!?!?!?

hmmm... not what I was expecting... I wasn't planning to sell, just give them away to the LFS. I live in a flat...I cant have 40 tanks! But yes your right...I do need another tank preferably something decent for them to grow in... I just hate the glue spread like peanut butter down the sides of the tank..Hence why I was looking for a better quality tank. It looks like I'm running out of options though...:amazed:

The first 'rule' to fishkeeping is to research before you buy.....perhaps it should be the first rule before getting your fish to breed as well. LOL......not to worry Kribs, you can join all of us with MTS! :D:D

Good call - plate glass is functional but a display tank is the heroin of MTS. Once you are hooked even Tupperware has tank potential.

    Welcome ...
