I have a new little tank that had a dense black sponge as well as some filter floss in the rear "filter" compartments of the tank.

I used to keep marines, so I immediately removed those thinking they would become nitrate traps... However now I am left with a little tank that has NO filtration. Do I put them back in the tank??

if you have limited space for filtration then you should use the best media you can get that will maximize the filtration processes in such a small space and this media is Eheim Substrat Pro...

Substrat pro is a medium granular filter media that can be placed directly into the filter chambers...

perhaps yes post some pics of the filter compartments...

NB: Eheim substrat pro is out of stock at the wholesaler and we've all been waiting months for new stock - was told today maybe mid Feb... If you cant find this anywhere then the next best media is Hydroton.

Here's the little PICO i'm setting up for my girlfriend:

Here's the rear compartments. You cans see at the moment there is just some floss, a heater and small return pump.

Here's some gravel i picked out - looked more natural than most of the ugly stuff they had. Will this be ok?

Tetra PlantaMin (liquid fertilizer) as well as AlgiMin (haven't used any of this yet)

Nutrafin Aqua+ as well as Nutrafin Cycle
    [IMG]

    Couple of questions:
I'd really like this tank to be full of plants - perhaps have a few neons or white clouds. But with it being so small i dont want to get too technical. Whats the best way of doing this in such a small tank?

I dosed nutrafin cycle, not sure if this product works? Has anyone used it with success?

Dolphin: where abouts in JHB? Could you pls PM me? I tried sending you a PM but my post count is too low :/ hehe

okay, it looks like you should have space to pack in the filter media - you should look to get the 250ml.

the gravel appears abit course, especially for plants so I would advise you look at a smaller grain size that will encourage root development.

I cant comment on the tetra producst as I dont use those...

its a very pretty setup that has lots of potential! You were also enquiring about fish on another thread and if I may suggest, you might want to consider some of these PICO Fish:
    Microrasbora Galaxy
    Microrasbora Erythomicron
    Microrasbora Nana
    Rasbora Vulcanos
    Boraras Merah
    Boraras Brigrittae
    Rasbora Kubotai

Many thanks for the comments Dolphin.

With regards to the gravel - will it trap detritus and end up causing hassles?? Could you recommend substrate? please PM me your shop address and I will come past tomorrow if that is ok?

The Rasbora Kubotaiis looks awesome! Could I keep maybe 6 of these? How easy are they to get stock of? Also are they easier to keep/smaller than the neon tetras?
