    Hi guys

So I never thought id want to get into this conversation ever but who am I kidding. This hobby is never a 1 tank hobby right?

So I've just ordered a custom tank 60L X 50W X 50H. This will be my female holding and fry tank (currently have 1 female yellow lab holding due in a day or 2, 11 s.fryeri that were released 3 days ago and only 5 left of my dragon blood fry that's over a month old, few MTS which I'm getting a few assassin's for and 2 Ancistrus SP L183 which I bought thinking they're juvenile when they arrived they were tadpoles literally)

Lost quite a few due to space issue in the tiny tank they're all in currently. Also there's no space for the fish and breeder net so it's time I give them some space.

Have a sponge filter that already on the tank and a 1000l\ph internal filter that's seeded in my main tank so filtration is covered.

I need inspiration on the scape of the tank itself. Currently my main tank has white sand, dragon rock, seiryu rock and Texas holey rock which I really like the look off but I want to make this tank look like a stunner and completely different.

Since the fish are going to be fry, till about 1inch there's no worry about them redecorating so I'm really open to doing anything. And not really on a budget either so the sky is the limit

    What are your thoughts?

    Ooh exciting
So does this open up plants and/or you’re keen for it? What’s your lfs stocking options like, cause I remember this being a bit of a challenge?

More importantly, what floats your boat?

Hehe yes very excited for this

Well I'm not sure about what low tech I can go. I'd like some plants given that the fry won't bother them at all and it will help provide cover. I had vallisneria nana in the main tank that just became food think I have 2 or 3 pieces left in the fry tank that's not growing but just staying safe. Like a tiny strand of Christmas moss left that I wouldn't mind more of. So you will definitely need to give me some tips here if you don't mind

I have seen those sand "waterfall" things that my wife liked but not sure how to build those.

I definitely don't want driftwood because it will change the PH and moving females from main tank to this tank would cause a jump in pH and that'll end in disaster.

So I guess that sums it up lol

There's a place (discus.ae) you can checkout. The list of plant's on there is going to be what I'm choosing from @A new day

If you intend to regularly catch fish from this tank (eg move females back and forth, or catch fry) I suggest you make removable pieces of aquadecor using epiphytes on stone. Otherwise it can be very frustrating ruining a scape with nets each time you need to catch fish that are then hiding in the plants. I see that in my QT which isn’t scaped but full of stem plants etc I propagate - often have to rip out all /most of the plants then replant.

Not managing to open the discus.ae website but look for anubias (come in a variety of species ranging from super large to tiny), bolbitis heudelotti, bucephelandra and java fern (although java fern gives me mediocre results, it grows well for some other folks.

These plants can be superglued / ziptied / tied with sewing thread to various pieces of stone and the roots will eventually attach themselves to the rock. They shouldn’t be planted in substrate.

I agree with @A new day.
If this is going to be a breeding / fry tank, you don’t want to be over doing the decor. For one, catching fish will be difficult. And secondly, fry need to be fed regularly, which in turn means regular water changes.
Rocks etc will just trap waste and make it more difficult to remove

Hi @A new day and @Reedfish . Thank you for this. I didn't think of it that way. I agree will be a hassle to catch them. with the fry it's okay coz I will need to be moving all at one but yeah females will be elusive. however the good thing is I can still use breeder nets coz I only take holding females out on the 15th or 16th day which usually is 2 or 3 days max. By then babies are ready to go on their own anyway. The MTs makes great work of left over food and my 10gal has been more stable than my main tank. Of course it's babies only but feeding is 2 or 3 times a day.

I guess I will have to make work with some rocks and sand. With very limited plants

On my breeders I use floating plants and mosses and anubias on rocks. All easily removed if needed.

@A new day as you can see. Lol there is a 2% vat that's been introduced haha. No longer the "tax free" place you're probably used to

Will these need ferts, special soil or can I just put them on a rock and rock on sand and hope for the best?

No ferts required. The floaters just float around, the mosses lie on top of the sand / base of the tank and the anubias is tied to a rock and just left there. You can also look into java fern and buce as these are also just tied to rocks and allowed to root.

That looks like a pretty good selection actually. The epiphyte suggestion is a good one. Some of the bigger plants, like Crinum Thaianum are tempting but they might dominate the tank.

    I'd go for:
various Anubias - "Coffeefolia" gets a bit bigger, "Nana" and "Petite" stay smaller.
Bolbitis Heudelotii is a great plant that slowly creeps over decor
Microsorum pteropus - Normal, Narrow and Trident can work. I've heard Windelov is a bit tougher to do in a low-tech setup
Nymphaea lotus - You can let the leaves go up to the surface, or pinch off the longer shoots to keep it compact
Vesicularia dubyana 'Christmas' - grows really well, but appreciates lower temperatures and softer water.

I remember ciggies cost R10 for a box of 20s. Ok this was 10years ago but even then it was a whole lot cheaper than here!

Haha and that's why people carry in so many ciggies when travelling back.

There's a TV show about Heathrow Airport and on one of the episodes this one person tried to bring in 1000 ciggies
