This weekend I added water to our big 3.2m tank. Added all that is required to condition the water but the water seems green. It's been running for a day and the water doesn't seem to get better. Why would it be this greenish colour?

The media will be added today (it was on order) and we will be decorating the tank in the next few days.

Is possibly an algal bloom triggered on set up.
Once the media is in the filter and has been running for a few days, it should clear up.

Yes in addition to the above
    - how long do you keep the lights on for? An algae bloom (pea soup water) can be influenced by light too intense or long
    - live plants will help tremendously
    - seeing that it’s just set up one can assume that it’s not an excess of nutrients but imbalance in a new tank.
    - what exactly did you use to condition the water?

Currently, there are no lights in the tank. However, it's getting a little bit of sunshine for about an hour. This will be our goldfish, comets and koi tank so live plant won't last :(
Using stability and prime, anything else to use??

I would stick to goldfish and comets and not add any koi, unless you have a really big outdoor pond you can move them to as they grow. I was reading up on them recently (I keep comet goldfish as well and recently built a larger pond so was wondering if I could add koi) and they can grow up to 3 feet in length! And they need a ridiculous amount of water per koi. So even though your tank is really big, and could certainly handle goldfish as they grow to their full sizes (up to 1 foot in length), koi would still get too big for the tank.

Also, given that there's no media yet, I wonder if the simple addition of stability didn't cause the green water. To the best of my knowledge (which might certainly be wrong), stability is the addition of good bacteria. But without media they might not have had anywhere to grow/live, and so that alone has caused the imbalance. There's also no fish, so no food for the good bacteria, so they could be dying off, causing the algal bloom.
Once media has been added and the water has been left to circulate and settle for a few days I would imagine (again, might be wrong) that it will sort itself out.

Good logic and advice here. I didn’t click there’s no media in yet - that would be first priority.

On a tank that size you can certainly add one or two goldfish to help get the cycle going. Then add additional livestock gradually.

Prime and Stability are excellent products. On your tank size Seachem Prime might be more economical going forward - like Prime but in powder form.

I think she means Seachem Safe is more economical ;)

I was just going to say this haha.

Your sunlight could most definitely be the cause here. Like @HugBug and @A new day has highlighted. Get the media in and maybe add 2 fish to help kickstart your bacteria colony

I gone and bought some tetra algofin and did a double dose yesterday evening. This morning the tank looked a bit better so done another dose. The whole day it looked the worst it been. Feeling very very disappointed going to add the battery airpumps during loadshedding some thing awesome happend. All the green shit moved down to the bottom of the tank forming a cloud like cover. The tank above is clear and normal. Tomorrow I will use hose to drain it. See the pics..

    @dikdeon,

Have you added media to the filter yet ??
I think that once you have that sorted and the water chemistry stabilises this problem will go away.

Just an update. Friday evening the tank water looked incredibly thick. I decided to drain the tank Saturday morning. Waited ages for the 2000l water to drain, giving the tank s super scrub and clean. Cleaned the sump, and washed all the gravel and decor. Spend 2 days cleaning everything. Yesterday evening filled the tank and all is 100%. Water clarity is already brilliant and the tank is cycling nicely.

The only thing that I did differently was I used another hose to fill the tank. Not sure if that did something the previous round.

Thanks for the help and advice!
