The Convict babies in the same hatchery lived.
Now the third batch eggs were laid yesterday and i will remove them today to the hatchery tank(Ouch!!):fight:

Convict spawn - All are doing well.(as always)

Rainbow Dwarfs - All hatched and the parents are looking after them extremely well. They are still in the Dwarf cichlid tank.

While the Rainbow Cichlids are incredibly pretty and beautiful fish, with incredible temperaments, I am quite sure they are black listed... Dammit. It's really annoying that these great specimens are not really allowed in SA. But neither are Convicts...

I wouldn't advertise that you are breeding them.

    Hi Slojo,

If your Oscar babies died after two weeks then there is something wrong in the tank that you are keeping them in, such as water quality caused by inadequate filtration or just not soft enough water for starters or something else, perhaps inadequate nutrition, they eat like horses. Once Oscar babies have reached two weeks old there is actually no reason why they should not make it, so I would give some attention to the tank. Are you feeding them freshly hatched bs for starters?

On the convict issue they are definitely blacklisted and a menace. Why does every LFS have them? Because they breed like rabbits. Much the same applies to the Heterotilapia. I would use them to feed the Oscars. Sounds terrible but if we are to be blunt, then the chances are that you will not get them sold in any case.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Thanks Prof.
Yes i breed the Convicts as Oscar food.
As for feeding,i gave them "Baby Food for egglayers".
Maybe that is where i went wrong.
I also got some Purigen now as well as some snails to help with the cleaning.
    I'm using a spunge filter.
The tank is a 90Liter Tank filled halfway.
If i put in new eggs and add methylene blue will it have any effect on the other babies already in the tank?

    Hi Slojo,

I would strongly advise that you do feed freshly hatched brine shrimps as a first food to the babies There is no other starter food that has the nutritional contents of freshly hatched bs, and if you think of how fast those little fishes have to grow then they need good food. You should also feed fine granulates after a few days additionally but the bs must be fed for 2-3 weeks minimum.

I always say that when keeping fish you should not treat the symptom but the cause. What I mean is that you should not try to remove harmful substances with Purigen or treat with things like Methylene Blue, but rather try to stop the formation of harmful substances. Methylene Blue is a joke BTW because bacteria will actually grow on the stuff by now because they have developed resistance to it.

If I hear your tank size, then I would fill the tank completely. Oscars get massive and for adults you actually need a much bigger tank. I would also increase the filtration. A corner filter for such heavy feeders is inadequate. You should get a larger external filter or a sump filter to give stronger filtration so that you can get better mechanical filtration, in other words, remove particles better, and also so that you can improve biological filtration, in other words that the filter has a bigger capacity for bacteria which will break down ammonia and nitrite better so that you do not have niggling low levels of nitrite which actually have a negative influence on fry. I would also like to suggest that when breeding Oscars you do a 50% water change once a week to get nitrate levels down.

    Hope this will work!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Forgot to say the 90Liter is the "creche".
My Breeding pair is in a 400Liter.

OK, why don't you let the parents raise the fry themselves? Oscars are the most amazing parents and then you do not need to move them from one tank to another and the filtration in that tank is most probably much better?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Will try on next spawn.First spawn disappeared.Maybe the current in the tank was too strong?

    Hi Slojo,

Position the outlet of your strong filter so that it faces into one of the sides of the aquarium so that you reduce the current. You can also put a large sponge over the inlet of the filter to stop the fry from being sucked into the filter.

The other thing that you must realize is that all large cichlids including discus are stupid the first time they spawn, they make mistakes and then sometimes eat their spawns. What you must do is to observe very carefully what they are doing and then you must compensate to help them. In general, you must realize that bright light and open areas will disturb the fishes so if you can work in this direction the fish may make a success of spawning. I believe very strongly in careful observation so that you can see what the fishes need and want.

Bottom line is if you can get the Oscars to look after their babies you will actually be able to raise them much more easily as they will do all the hard work of looking after the fry.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
