    Hi all

Good to c that there are some other crazy fish keepers out there.

I started last year with a 4 ft tank with Angels, Clown loach and cardinals. After getting hooked so to speak I ordered a 3M x 600 x 600 tank which I am planning to add round 10 Angels, 50 cardinals/Neons, 6 clown loaches, 2 freshwater stingray, 6 plecostomus in for a start. Managed to get some wood for the tank from a friend in pongola, olive tree. Planning to fill the tank with live plants. Should be getting the tank towards the end of the week.

Will send fotos of the tank on arrival. Very psyched!

    Any advice will be appreciated!

    Regards

    Francois

The SA Government has a list of fish species that are Black Listed aka we my not import, keep or trade in them... 4 Potomotrygon ray species are on this list... However,a lot of this genus is not on the BL... including my favourite.. P.leopoldii..

Although you are getting what is a pretty big tank,it is way to small for Stingrays... Floorspace wise that is... Also the cost of Rays are exorbitant... you are looking at R40 - R50K to import and pay for a pair of P.leopoldii (Come on Lotto!!!!)

At that price I think they ay be some of the Asian Sharp nose rays... Notoriously difficult to keep and COMPLETELY outgrows any tank... In Nature the disc size can be well over 3m....

    Hi and welcome.

Rays need a huge tank and a dedicated setup.

But in a tank that size, you could keep some other amazing tankbusters too!

Planning to use a 4 ft tank for filtration, and a return pump doing 4500l/h. Do you think that would be sufficient to keep the tank clean?

@Francois Marais, Stingray need a tank the size of your living room... If you want to house them, a shallow tank is best. Dimensions of roughly 6m x 3m x500mm will be minimum. They outgrow any comercially available tank. Also Neons and Loaches will go first. The Angels will have to be big. They dig up substrate in search for food, so plants will also not work unless you choose floating or ferns attached to wood. The pleco can't be kept with stingray as they suck on them, removing the slime coating that protects the skin.

@azurekoi, The Asian Sharpnose is not freshwater. You are referring to the freshwater stingray "Himantura Signifer" the resemblace are very close though. They are found in. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Not for me as all stingray are poisonous. A sting will result in a visit to the hospital.

Would a mix tank of mainly angels and discus work an then the loaches, pleco's and cardinals?

@Francois Marais, A lot of people say that Discus and Angels can't be kept in the same tank. I know of a couple of people who have pulled this off with success. I would say rather go for one or the other. They are both beautiful fish, but keep in mind Angels are easier to keep than Discus. Do some research. Then decide. The other fish will be fine with either or both.
