Hi Guys, I am a new member to the forum. A quick intro, I have been keeping fish since I was 10 years old. Started with a old skool metal frame tank and some gold fish. Since then then their has never been a time in my life that I did not have some or other type of fish tank. 40 years later I am about to setup the biggest tank I have owned.

A monster 1.52x360x1760. Well for me its a monster. I love Oscars and Parrots and have got to know them very well over the years and had huge success with rearing tiny little guys into huge guys.

This will be the first acrylic/glass mix tank that I have ever had and was wondering if you guys had any advice on the gravel that I should use. Traditionally I have always used to plain old skool gravel. I dont really like the artificial colours of the blue and red and pink etc.....

What would be the best type of gravel to use in this size tank, keeping in mind I need to make it easy for maintenance and cleaning. Since this tank is very tall, all cleaning and maintenance is going to have to be done on a ladder.

Looking forward to engaging more on the forums. Best Regards, TIA

Welcome to you sir! Looking forward to pictures of that tank. Also with you on the gravel. Artificial colors just don't do it for me.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum

I find a rounded gravel, natural coloured of about 2mm is the best to use.
Play sand is good, but loads of it often ends up in the filter.
Gravel that is too big tends to trap a lot of waste and can be tricky to clean.

And I am also not a fan of artificially coloured pink or blue substrate

I use poolfilter sand in larger tanks and it works well plus it is very cost effective compared to gravel from petshop
