New Member - Tank fallout

Hi, i have kept fish for years, but new to the Forum.

i recently had happen to me something i have only heard horror stories of.

From a healthy Cichlid tank (mostly african cichlids) to a nightmare in 2 weeks. started murky to murky green to flowering alge in every nook / sump.

The baby Cichlids started showing extreme stress, i took the weak fish into a small hospital setup (bucket more or less) and removed all sand / filter medium etc.. 12H cleanup later and the tank is well again.

i have mooched some awesome info from this forum, for this i thank you sincerely.

 

With all the water cuts / reservoirs that keep running dry in JHB I suspect they have upped the treatment - so if you have been doing a top-up / wc during this time maybe it crashed your bacteria in your tank and filters?

I have played with may phototropic bacteria products - this year it was mostly https://www.efficientmicrobes.co.za/product/super-em/ and I do like the results - dose it after a WC and in-between to help keep a good bacteria going.

Thanks Ferdie, i have been looking at a few phototropic type products, i will get me some super-em. (i suspect the same as you do regards our water)

@f-fish!! where do you find this stuff! i would be too scared to use it, but it says all natural I guess
I will also be getting some, so would this replace something like seachem stability?

Glad you got the algae bloom sorted.
When I had mine, it was a nightmare, and I finally resorted to getting a UV Steriliser to get it under control.

hmmm - no clue what stability does - never used it.

So what do we have locally - scape has back-up, then you get probio at most builders etc - maybe even pnp and you get several re-bottle of dry product that then just has water added.

You can get several "made for aquarium" imported products - but I only bothered once and realized that the local tea is same or better.

Stability is just a bacteria source made by seachem. Used it many a time to kickstart the filtration.

 

Hi, Where did you get the Bullterrier statue????? I WANT one!!!

 

It was purchased a few more than ten years back on the kzn southcoast at some obscure mall shop of sort. we have been back since they can tell us nothing about it.
