    Hi All

My names Marc and I am a new member and fish keeper (looks like the intro to an AA meeting -). I started keeping fish in January 2012 and am really enjoying it. Firstly I made the mistake of buying a fishbowl and 2 Ranchu's for my 2 year old daugther. I realised very quickly that fishbowls are a no-no so I made the 2nd mistake of going to Builder Warehouse and buying an overpriced 30l Marltons starter kit. Unfortunately the very cute Ranchu's got some kind of fluffy disease and died. I took over the tank and now have 9 neons, 3 large female guppies, about 17 baby guppies (had a male guppy and they bred) and a pleco in the tank. I know it is completely overstocked but I'm only getting my new 100l in 2 weeks so please don't bite my head off :embarrest:.

    Hi and welcome.

Do you know what type of Plec it is?
If it's a common/gibbiceps, they get to about 30cm+ and a 100L still won't be big enough for that unfortunately.

Hi All. Thanks for the welcome.
Reedfish - I believe its a common pleco and unfortunately I only did my homework after I bought him. He is currently about 15cm long and growing by the second! I'm hoping I can trade him for a baby pleco when he gets too big. Not sure if my LFS will trade, and if not what will I do with him. My 2 year old daughter loves him and calls him Tom/Nemo.

It would be best if you could move him on.
Ideally, if the LFS would take him.

See if you can get something called a Bristle Nose Plec. It would be far more suitable for a 100L tank. And the males get these wierd looking bristles on thier snout...hence the name :D

Reedfish - I took a look at the pleco you mentioned. Not so sure. They're not as pretty as the common variety. I would love a clown or zebra pleco but I'm not sure if we get them in Cape Town. I haven't seen any yet.

@MarcHawke, Hi and Welcome. The Zebra Plec will be an option yes. But do you want to pay R600 and up for it? That is what they go for unfortunately..

SloMo.00. - Thanks for the welcome and reply. All I can say is WOW and Hectic. Is there any particular reason why they demand such high prices other than the obvious beauty of them?

@MarcHawke, That is exactly it. They are beautiful. And rare, very rare. I have never seen one myself in anyone's tank. You can have a look at the Royal plec. Also rare. But you do get them.

SloMo - Still not sold - bit odd looking. I think the black and white stripes of the clown and zebra are amazing. I quite like the gold nugget plecos as well.

@MarcHawke, Yes I admit they are not for everyone. They are quite popular among aquarists though. One thing I have learned over the years is the more expensive fish doesn't necessarily give the most rewards in this hobby. Although many people buy fish on visual appeal only, it is not allways the rite thing to do. I have lost R700 on a Fire Eel because I didn't do recearch on them. The most beautifull Eel of them all in my opinion.

Do recearch bud. Lots of it.:pcguru:

I have realised the errors of my ways and have done a lot of research for my new 100l. I cannot wait to start the new tank.

    Hey there MarcHawke,

I remember how I got into fish... Also two goldfish. They were my three year old daughter's. Saved them from those fuzzy spots & an entire missing tail (fin rot) after she washed them several times with liquid soap and rubbed them dry with a towel! So one thing led to another, before you know it I have a cute little nano planted tank! Lol

    Welcome!

@Uda - Hi. Now that is a remedy for disease I've never heard of. And you say it worked! Wish I could have saved the Ranchu's as they really were adorable but had they survived, I wouldn't have a tropical tank or be here....
