    Hiya all

I just joined to forum. My wife and I are keen to start a tropical tank. She has had tanks before but been out of it for some time. We're looking for some good advice on where to go and what to get.

    Many tanks, er, thanks

    Welcome to TASA!

What size tank you thinking of getting or, what fish are you most interested in?

    Thanks for the welcome.
I was thinking of a 60l tank, fresh water tropical like Tetras, Cichlids, Loach. The wife used to have Betta's (in their own tank of course)

Welcome, if you looking at keeping African cichlids 60l tank is going to be too small, also not going to be able to mix them with too many other types of fish

Thanks Ortaega, that's exactly the sort of info I need. I have no idea. We're looking for a fish shop in or near Centurion, or even in the greater PTA area, so we can see tanks and fish. I didn't realise Cichlids were that big. Lol.

OK, I guess Cichlids are out for that size of tank. I just read an article that says a tank of about 100l is good for beginners. Would the forum members here concur?

I was quite lucky got a 4ft 250l tank at a great price ans started a Mbuna tank, still quite new but fish growing beautiful and still need to work on my scape in the tank.

Well someone once told me on TASA it is easier to maintain and stabilize a 3ft 110 litre tank than looking after smaller tanks.

Also the bigger the tank the better your opportunities of different fish species. I am still also learning but the good people from TASA will also guide you they have great insight and I have learned quite allot from this forum. So far I had no casualty due to bad water conditions, unfortunately only lost one over the weekend as the one little guy was digging a bit more than they usually do and a rock fell on him :(.

I have kept African cichlids in a 3ft tank, took some extra work. imo this would be the smallest that I would go for cichlids

Thank you guys. Now the next question is where can I go find tanks and fish? PM me if it can't go on the forum. I'm looking in the PTA area.

    Yup. I agree.
    The bigger the better.

Malawis can get aggro, so need some space if another fish is having a go at it.
Also, they produce a relative large amount of waste, so is easier to keep stable parameters in a bigger tank.

When I had Mbuna, it was in a 250L tank
    Wouldn't have gone smaller.

True, They also grow at a rapid pace I bought mine @ about 2 - 2.5cm and some of them is already 5 - 7 cm in size 2 months later. When they were smaller they were a bit less aggressive and made less of a mess. Now they are quite a bit more messy and aggressive especially the biggest one of all my Mbuna. My poor feather fin cats was almost always in hiding as well as the Mbuna used to team up and nip at them.

As for LFS in Pretoria, there is a few sponsor on this forum from there, other than that I do not really know allot from stores in Pretoria, but good luck though.
