so went to get a new filter after my HOB burned out and bought a Hailea internal beaut filter. it seems nice i took the charcoal cartridge out as i now have a few plants in there and i hear that charcoal isnt good in general for a tank. my only problem is that i have to use a spray bar as without it my poor guppies are nearly blown away lol and its a wee bit loud i was thinking i could widen the holes a lil to make the flow less and from there the noise? anyway back to the subject i was looking at the stock and saw they had khulis at R15 ea. granted they a lil small but i bought 2 i think they great and very active swimming up and down the front of the tank and exploring. ill feed some frozen blood worms lata. i really just couldnt resist then lol and i thought these fish were shy?
Congrats on your khulis. The truth about them is that they are shy. When they are happy in the tank with lots of cover they hide away all day and only come out after lights out. The reason that yours may be swiming up and down in the front of the tank is because they are stressed out, give them a day or two to get used to the new surroundings and you won't see them till after lights out. I really love khulis, they are great to watch when they do come out to play.[they like to swim up and down over a air stone] I had five unfortunatly the tetras i had helped two of them on thier way so only have three left and i hardly ever see them.
Bauer your tetras must be some pirana subspecies. They have killed a few things if I remember correct. Will not get khulis for myself as they will not fit in with my tank but they are cool.
Ja those tetras were bad news. I got a good deal for them i swaped i think it was twelve tetras for 8 leopard danios, 8 zebra danios and about 20 mixed guppies, good deal hey.
Sorry to hear about the HOB - sounds like the atman does have an issue with self priming. "its a wee bit loud" if the sounds is indeed caused by cavitation I'd say drop the spray bar below the water level .. you do not need the spray action (above the water) to cause surface circulation. In the past I have also covered the holes of the spray bar with a batting strip secured via cable ties. Yeah khulis are great - love eating dead guppies ...
the probem is that if i have the bar 2 close to the surface the guppies get blown all over the place. i widened the holes tonight and that helped a bit ill do it some more tomorrow when i get home from work and can get into the tools all i had to work with tonight was a craft knife and triangle file. it has a flow of 350l/h i think this weekend il boil the wood iv had soaking for the last month and a half to get the last of the tannins out and then ill be adding at least one piece to the guppy tank. and will possible add a few more pebble piles which they seem to like to slip through.
I have a school of Khulis in my 500L - with loads of hiding places... They are look great against the dark gravel (provided you don't have the black ones). Mine are very active - attributed to the larger group but also that they feel comfortable with all the hiding places.
Kuhlis are awesome, but like all loaches they need to be in a group of 5 or more, so see if you can add another 3 sometime and you'll most likely see them more often. I just added another 5 to my one tank and the 7 of them are now all over the place
mine actually do quite well hey, they very active and i have made them plenty of hidey holes. i found a chunk of wood thats hollow and has two entrances that the larger khuli quite likes and theres plenty of caves and hollows. i cant really get anymoreas the tank is too smallwhat with the guppies.
