I've been designing and redesigning the most popular DIY's on the net to look and function more exceptionally and have a professional appeal and look. So dig in and get your hands dirty . .

. . .the moment most of us have been waiting for . . .

Cellphone pics but it tells the story!

Please note that there is no detailed explanation given just because its general knowledge as to what you should do

Okay so basically what you will need for this DIY . . .

    - Black sray paint
    - Acrylic pipe or thick air line
    - Water tight container . . .by ADDIS
    - Masking tape
    - Silicon Sealant

Okay this is what the hatchery looks like before being painted . .. this gives you an idea of how the internals look

    74025_1644367116533_1457541610_1621384_475700_n.jpg

when you get your container you will have to cut a hole at the top 0.3mm bigger than the outside diameter of your acrylic pipe (Length of the pipe is not important just as long as it sticks out of the container at least 2cm)

Here's the hole. Cut with a drill fitted with a grinding head

    76226_1644367516543_1457541610_1621386_1515587_n.jpg

    and the pipe

    150054_1644367756549_1457541610_1621387_1690564_n.jpg

This is how the pipe should be fitted . . .

    149889_1644367356539_1457541610_1621385_2921778_n.jpg

    IMPORTANT . . .

Looking at the above picture you will see 2 protruding (Sticking out) ends on the left and right of the lid. Please mask off the left (Shorter) protruding end with masking tape and remove the pipe from the lid . . .

    PAINT!!!!!

Get outdoors and setup a painting surface away from animals and children

Now that you have masked the pipe Paint only the external side of the pipe. Leave the inside unpainted. Do the same for the lid and the container.

    74060_1644368036556_1457541610_1621388_6831480_n.jpg

Now this is how the pipe should look after paint . . .

To be continued . . do not post until I have finished the diy post . .

    okay . .

You will notice the one side clear and the rest painted . . .this is for a reason that will be explained (Although very obvious?) later on . .

    Now the sealing . .

Seal around the clear protrusion but try to keep the clear part clean.

Well. You are done and left with a professional looking, non aerated and non heated BS hatchery . . .Designed by myself . .

Stay viewing for part 3 - HOW IT WORKS

    Part 3

So I've made the thingy but how does it work???

    Don't fret my friend . .

The whole idea is based on the scientific properties of BLACK . .

    - It absorbs light and heat
    - It heats up faster and retains more heat than other colours

Another important factor is that it makes a light-tight enclosure ..

The idea is to have the acrylic pipe as the only light source. This helps later on

So ya ya ya . .how do I use the thing?

    Okay . .firstly . .

Remove the lid and fill the container with water, salt, etc . .

Place the black part of the pipe into the water before you add the eggs. You don't want any eggs getting into the pipe . .

Add the eggs and close the lid . .

Now get more salt water ...at least 2L more . . fill up the hatchery (with the lid closed and through the pipe) until you see the water level rise into the pipe but don't let it overflow . .

In 48 hours . .the eggs will hatch and the BBS will be drawn to the light coming in from the pipe and rise up. You will see the BS moving in the VIEWING/HARVESTING AREA (Clear part of the pipe)

Take an airline and attach it to a syringe and harvest as necessary. Be sure to top up the water you take out. Do this gently so eggs don't rise up into the harvest area and so you can see the Baby Brine Shrimp AND harvest . . .

    No shells. No fuss.

    hi tankmaster
have you used this yourself - what is the success rate...?

how long does it take for the BS to hatch..? howcome it does not need to be aerated...?

hahaha . . the eggs hatched this morning . . not all ...but hey...most of them ..lol

Hatch speed and rate depends on the grade of eggs you are using . .

Clearly aeration does not play a part in hatching. Just fed BS my apistos this morning. .

    So yeah. . .It works!!! . .

Okay, so that's for baby brine shrimp (and a very elegant solution might I add). How would you need to keep them to so that you'd get big fat adult brine shrimp, ready for hungry Loaches for instance?

Well why would you want to feed adult brine shrimp when the babies are more nutritious?

Well, as for growing them . .this cant be done unless you know what to feed them . .

The adult brine shrimp are more filling for my greedy fish. I'll have to look around to see what they'll need to be fed :)

    I'm bumping this thread...

I will be making another one of these soon since I'm kicking into the breeding thing again.

Honestly the BEST way to hatch and harvest brine shrimp without spending too much.

    2 questions:

How do you know which spray paints are safe to use?
    Absolutely no aeration??

Non-toxic worked for me. No deaths, leeching etc. If you're skeptical, you can use black pond sealer which is a bit more expensive.

Yes, no aeration and I actually had a VERY good hatch rate. - Even better than with an air pump.
