Ons hier in Namakwaland gebruik net Engels vir self defence

    Hello alle vis boere.

I am from Vredendal halfway between Cape Town and Springbok

After almost 34 Years I restart this hobby and hopefully this time with much more success, those days information was limited, no Internet at all, and today I spend hours reading up articles and for the first time I really enjoy and understand fish keeping.

    Regards
    ADW

    Hi ADW,

Welcome on the forum. I hear you guys knit (brei) a lot up there in Namakwaland, most probably because of all of the sheep you have.

The descriptive term for "Engels" in Afrikaans is "Brits" boet, so this is what you guys use in self defence in between all the knitting.

We will do our best to help you, the medium fishes converse best in is water, and we try not to get the language issue mixed up in all of this.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Vis,

These places don't have pet shops, they have "vis winkels" and then they sell snoek and bokkoms, lekker stuff man, but you can't keep them in an aquarium.

ADW, remember we have priority mail now and can send you plants and foods, for fishes this is a little bit too slow, but then you will just simply have to visit the "ou Kaap". What we can help you with is to give you advice where you can get the fishes that you are interested in and other handy tips.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Jeslikit Vis,

You are gooi-ing the 'brits' in a fancy way man, I like this "spoketh the brits" that sounds really hot man, but then coming from Upington, it adds a new perspective to the meaning of "hot"....

Yes, Upington would have visbakke and the main fishes would be barbers and sandvisse......

I think the only thing that you see swimming in the water in Upington are vineyards when you have another flood... but let us not think of these bad things.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Thanks again, feeling already "Welkom" mind you we have "2" petshops here ,very friendly and helpfull. Thanks Dirk for giving advice regarding food and other services, I want start off with two questions- 1. I have a tank already running now since September 2009, so far without any major problems, i use standard aquarium gravel as substrate, catching up with all the tips & tricks, will it be wise to just give the gravel a good vacuum and then cover it with a layer of filter sand instead of a total clean-up from scratch? maybe it will improve plant grow Q2. I want to invest in Discus fish, maybe 2-3 of them, approx 100 Liter tank set-up, and finally who can i contact as a trusted dealer or breeder who stock healthy fish. in Cape Town area, I am willing to come and collect it myself or make use of a overnight courier.

    Thanks
    ADW

    Hi ADW,

Glad to hear that there are some petshops in the area, at least that means that one can get the basics from them.

We have just had a long discussion about adding palm fiber peat to your substrate, so do read that. Just cleaning your gravel is not going to help very much and if there are wastes in the gravel they cannot give much of a benefit to the plants. You also need an aquatic fertilizer. These threads are in the "Ask the Professor" forum.

With regard to Discus, I breed them, but I would not recommend two or three but rather a minimum of six. They are schooling fish particularly when they are small and if you keep less than six then one will hammer the others to death within a few weeks and then you only have one left.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

By the way, it would be better to place these questions in separate threads under the different sections as this is where we normally discuss matters.
