Hi Guys. I've recently started a 3ft tropical. My plan currently is to start simple, with little fishys and progress further. Currently tank consists of a few plants, gravel and compost mixture. Mainly guppies and platy's for now.

If you don't know something ask that is the only way to go about things. :)
Rather research your fish before buying as well.

Hehe ... I must say, aquariums are a very intimidating venture, but as you begin work it becomes more fun and entertaining .... And thanks to all you guys for the welcomes and well wishes and be sure to expect a huge amount of queries from me in future ... lol

    Welcome SV fighter.

Sounds like you doing the right thing and asking before doing.

I would highly recommend you to either NOT use the compost mixture, or rather use an undergravel substrate premixed from the Pet Store. Tetra make some good stuff.

The reason I say so is you will find a lot of people abdecating the use of potting soil, compost and even Rose shrub mix under the gravel. The problem with this is that it can, and a lot of the time it does contain manure in it, which will cause huge problems with your water chemistry. Also a lot of compost/potting soil is still decomposing, and you can understand that decomposing matter in your tank could potentially dangerous to the fish.

I would suggest rather get something that is specifically made for aquariums. I know a lot of people, (even here on the forum) will say it's safe to use potting soil, and Rose schrub mix... if you really want to go that route, chat to Prof Dirk (on this forum) and get his input.

Thanks for all the welcoming support. I've attached a pic of my tank for those who asked. My apologies, don't have a really good camera.

Thanks Gareth. yes, definately going to add a few more, but I must say, that since the pic was taken, the vallis has grown quite a bit already, and at this stage it looks alot fuller. Also wanting to add a few neons at the end of this month, at which time the tank would have been running for about 2mnths.

Quick question to anyone out there. My tanks water tends to turn a very light yellow every few days. Not so much that you notice it from the front, but if you look through the length of the tank it becomes apparent. Is this anything to worry about?

The yellow could be coming form the rock over time it could cause a build of chemicals which could be bad,,, there is a vinegar test you can do on the rock.
Dont know how that exactly works ?
