Had this tank and decided to create a new Betta tank for my daughter.

Went to Aqua Empire and got a small led light, langa soil and some wood and dragon rock.

Added the soil and some plants from my community tank to the mix. Wood is soaking in a bucket of water with prime.

Will be documenting the process here over the next few weeks so stay tuned

I've broken it down in to these phases:

    Phase one
Use existing gravel and hard scape to seed new soil. Add light and plants to tank to acclimatize.

    Phase two
Add new hard scape. Finalize plant and hard scape layout.

    Phase three
Confirm final setup and add some shrimp to the mix.

    Phase four
    Introduce Betta

During these phases I'll be doing testing to ensure water parameters are perfect before taking next step. I'm not putting times to these and will be adding more detail to each phase as things happen.

What plants are you thinking of adding?

Subwassertang, hornwort, Java fern and dwarf Amazon sword

All of these I currently have in my community tank and are in no short supply.

Might tweak the mix but that should be the base.

Will give the shrimp enough hiding place (they thrive in my community tank) and give the Betta enough to keep him entertained.

Question to those in the know. Read that Langa soil seeps nitrates for couple of weeks?

    Never used it before...

It does leach ammonia/ nitrates but not as much as Amazonia

Thanks, I will test and make sure. Might add some stability to speed up the process.

Will start testing from week 3.

So unfortunately the wood is still too buoyant to add to the tank.

Decided to spend the time waiting to try something new. Quick Subwassertang wall. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Finalized scape and tested water. Parameters where good (seeded filter and substrate speeded up process).

So visited Fantasea in Randburg this weekend and picked up this double tail betta. My daughters choice

Some shrimp added as well. Betta likes playing in the filter current and then returns to the low flow area (most of tank area is low flow). Shrimp looks to have settled but the betta already had a go at some of them.

Enough places for them to hide and get a good colony going.

Using scape complete and seachem stability (can never be too careful) to get things settled nicely

Thanks guys, my daughter chose the betta. I am happy with her choice though. Colors are visible as the betta swims around, blue / purple / pink comes through. Seems very happy in his tank and comes up to the front when one enters the room :)

    @Ren, looking good so far!

I quite like the white betta, different from all the striking colours
