is there a good product on the market that will help me increase the ph in my tank, dont really want to remove the driftwood and i understand that drops the ph.

Its not advisable to add Baking soda to your tank as the quick fluctuation of the ph can be lethal to your fish. Rather add limestone rocks inside your tank that will buff your ph or crushed coral with the ceramics at the bottom of your filter.

Nothing wrong with adding baking soda, its just a question of how much. Same goes for products that alter ph available off the shelf from your LFS.

Crushed coral works well in a Malawi tank, been using mine for well over a year

As much as you possibly can as it will dissolve in time.

Hi all, When adding in coral or shell it takes quite some time to get the desired levels of calcium into the water to hold the PH at 8-8,4 and to keep the hatdness at around 12-14. By adding in some Bicarbonta of soda you can get this done pretty quickly. I have around 60 species of Malawi's, 50+ tanks at home, and simply add between a 1/4 to a box of the stuff depending on the size of the tank. This I do even with the fish in the tank.
This will allow your system the time to start leaching out the calcium from the coral or shell you have in your system.

A 10kg bag of coral chip in the sump, and crushed shells substrate always kept my malawi tank around 8.2. I've read on the marine forums that the bicarb soda should be baked in the oven to be able to push up the pH over 8. If you going to add bicarb, do it slowly a little everyday and test till you at the desired pH. Then you should add a little with every water change of needed..

Got some F1 chaitikas that Doug Falconer bred from his WCs. Looks like 2 males and 6 females from their behaviour. They about 8-12cm now and living in big tank in the garage where its nice and quiet. Maybe in a year or so we'll see some action. I've also got another batch of 7 chaitika from doug which are from a different male and female to cross the blood lines a bit, but they about 5cm now only, So what you got for sale, looking to buy something interesting, and I hear you the man with the interesting malawis. Maybe I can pop in on the weekend if you not too busy.
