A minimum of 100L for the elephant nose. They are aggressive to fish of the same species so only one would be fine. They need well filtered aquariums. They also need lots of hiding spaces and must be fed at night.
Guppies for your dad. Another nice fish is an African Butterfly fish, but don't mix it with the guppies.

If he wants something that can be trained to eat from his hand, then an Oscar could do the job, but it will need to be a huge tank as these buggers need space! Only one to a tank as well!

The majority of Tilapia are Blacklisted, and can't be legally kept without a permit in SA, so they are a no go!

    Regards
    G!

Ok, a fully grown Butterfly fish is going to be bigger than a fully grown Ram! Rams are also very fussy about water parameters, so could require more work than others?

Angels need to be in groups of 6-8 ideally, so again a big tank! The other issue with Angels is that if/when they pair off and start laying eggs, they get aggressive and bully the rest of the group!

You could try a nice pair of Apistogrammas? Agassizii or Cacatuoides are a good starter with Apisto's, but Cactuoides is still around Ram sized, the Agassizii slightly bigger.

Kribensis could also be an option? They are less fussy than Rams, and slightly larger. Again though a group of around 6 is best?

I'll have a think about any other recommendations?

    Cheers

    Lots of Tetras... Yes!

Goldfish... Absolutely not! These things also grow huge, and are grossly mistreated in the trade! They should not be left in bowls or small tanks,as they can grow over 30cm in some cases even bigger still!

Cacatuoides or Aggassizii are nice as a pair with some tetras or threadfin Rainbows as 'dither fish', so that may work for you? Just have some good plants and some mopani wood for them to hide in.

    Cheers
    G!
