    Hi everybody,

I got these two plants with a tank I bought. Can anybody identify them?

I'm busy setting up my 4ft tank and need to know if I want to plant them and where.

    Thanks

WOW! If I'm right - then you just hit the jackpot! The first ones look like small Aponogeton madagascariensis, Madagascan Lace plant. Highly sought after... get v v big though... check that id and see if it seems right to you?

No idea on the 2nd though.

The guy I got it from said that the first one got huge, but it died down when he neglected his tank. He only had on T8 18W (10000K) light on the 4ft tank, so that couldn't have helped. I don't think it is the Aponogeton madagascariensis though. The leaves on this one looks more solid - I suspect they are just so thin and see-through because the plant is in bad shape.

Well - I'm not saying I'm right - but that heightens my suspicion. I just went to check what I recalled, and they prefer low light, and are known to drop their leaves at certain times - and to get huge! Can you take a close up of a leaf maybe?

The more I look at it, the more I think it is probably Aponogeton of some kind.

It does also look like the remnants of one of those flower stems on the bottom of this pic

I dont think its a lace. Those leaves looks like it is melting because of not enough light.

Yeah, the first pic looks like a dead sword of some kind to me. If its not dead, it will be soon.

The second plant is not aquatic, and will die in your tank.

First is indeed a neglected Echinodorus, second is Samolus(which is aquatic, just finicky)

Thanks, looking at images, it definitely looks like Samolus Valerandi (To me at least). Interestingly enough, this has been even more badly neglected than the sword (No heater, only ambient light, etc) and it looks exactly the same it did when I got it a month ago. Either way, I'll try it and see how it goes. It's leaves are breaking off very easily, so I don't think it's very happy.

Is the second plant looks to me as a samolus. Likes cold water around 20C so not usually suitable for most planted aquariums. But I could be wrong

That sword in photo 1 needs a lot of love and patience. Trim off all the dead and dying leaves. Even if you have 1 or 2 baby leaves left, it will grow. Put 3 or 4 panel nails around the roots to feed the plant iron (VERY IMPORTANT) and dose some ferts. The Samolus is fussy to say the least. Likes colder water conditions and needs carbon dosing (CO2 preferred) to really flourish.
