Sorry to bring up this very sensitive subject once again but I need advise on a Black Listed Species. Pleas read first before biting my head off :blink1: I am trying to do the right thing here.

I have a customer who wants to get rid of their fish and she asked me if I would like to take them because she knows I will take good care of them, but my problem with this is that they have a Freshwater Crayfish. They told that if I don't take it, it will go to a LPS.

So my question is do I take it and get rid it of it in a appropriate way or do I keep it and let mother nature take its coarse.

    Woah... Tread carefully here...

My advice, take the crayfish, and as horrible as it sounds, euthanize it. They are extremely invasive critters, and should not be coming into the country in the first place. This is one of the reasons that these species become invasive in the first place. People buy them, and when they can't take care of them anymore, they just dump them onto someone else, or release them into our native waterways.

These species in particular are extremely destructive.

Take it and look after it. No animal deserves to be killed for a reason like that especially if there are thousands on junkmail and gumtree for sale. If you do not want to look after it I will take it from you and make sure it does not get into any local waters.

I disagree with that, but everyone deserves their own opinion.

Personally I would also rather take care of it and ensure it's not released into our systems instead of killing it.

Pitty one will not make a meal.

    From the link ..

"And the best way to eat them? “Well, Thomas Sinn of Blue Danube won’t
use anything else for his bouillabaisse, Franck Dangereux poaches them in vegetable
stock, Reuben Riffel adds a few drops of truffle oil to a boiled tail. I love
them boiled in slightly salted water that also contains a few caraway seeds.
    They’re perfect just like that…”"

My stand point is why if you a perfectly experienced fish keeper must you kill a black listed species where so many unexperienced people dont kill their's. Killing this particular one will not benefit the problem at all.

But after all it is black listed so maybe try the zoo if they could not incorporate it into one of their displays.

This is exactly what I want to stop from happening because someone else not informed will do precisely that. If I may ask what's the penalty if you got caught with one because I feel the same as Dinky and Michael11. I think it falls under the same category as "animal cruelty" ?

The penalty is a fine, But I'm just giving advice. Use it, don't use it. This species is definitely invasive. It's not one of those In between species. It poses a threat. They burrow into dams and cause loads of damage. They are nasty hunters and they can and will destroy local species.

They are evil. So evil they even rip aquatic plants up. They will catch and kill small fish. They are nasty things.

I'm almost willing to bet that the food trade brought these buggers into the country, but the aquarium trade is trying to get in on the game. It's a shame. These kind of critters is what makes all fresh water shrimp illegal.

    Get rid of it.

I don't get why people want to take a chance with blacklisted species, if you get caught its like 100k fine or prison time, even if the chances are so small of being caught it os still not worth it and never will be. Just like shops selling shrimps, they make like a R400 profit but risk their entire business, that's just silly if you ask me.

Guys does anyone know the reproductive bio of these crayfish? keeping them and letting them live could be a problem, think water changes etc. eggs and parasites can be transported to water bodies by accident. parasitic cysts are particularily an issue and i'm not just talking of parasites of crayfish. Other invasive also carry pathogens which can affect native species. it is not unheard of for parasites to accidentally end up in the wrong host and then adapt and continuing using the new species as a host. because of the very short generation times of some parasites this adaption is not only possible but can be very rapid. admittedly these risks are small. But to be on the safe side I would destroy the animal/plant. again this is an opinion, because i think these animals should be killed does not mean I'm cruel or mean I simple think that the whole picture should be taken into account and all ethical considerations should be taken to ensure the animals are euthanized so as not to cause the animal distress.
