Name and shame?

Hi all

I visited an LFS in Cpt this week and was shocked to see some illegal livestock on offer!! i am a newbie but having read most of the posts here I know that selling shrimps/prawns is not on. Should I name and shame them or what? The shop was selling them for R20 a pop. Also, is Jewels illegal as they had these fish as well?

 

Boebie we are not supposed to name and shame on TASA - what you can do is contact the relevant authorities and report the shop. Henk Hugo has the contact details of who to contact.

Hey, I'd advise you to first let the owner know that it's illegal and warn him to discontinue stocking these fish/crustaceans. First give the owner a warning; it seems to be the best approach to solving anything.
Thereafter, if the shop owner does not comply, you can report him.
However, I suggest you give him enough time to mend his actions.

Good idea, only problem is the guy has then, he has paid good money for them, the importer is not going to refund or take them back. So the moment you threaten him, he dumps them down the drain and the environmental catastrophe begins. .. Well maybe, that is what I think.

The problem with name and shame in this regards is the moment you say who it is, I jump in my car and go and buy those shrimp I have always wanted.

I think best is phone the relevant authorities on the number Henk supplied.

 

Hi Boebie look at the rules and regulations it will help in knowing what the rules are on this site.

 

I agree with rogerrabbit, the lfs has paid good money for those fish and the people that make these regulations control any imports into the country and charge import tax on these very items they are banning.
So if the shops have got their livestock into the country legally why run off and report them?

Before everyone starts blasting me bout these imports causing havoc with indigenous species, i understand why it is important to be controlled but our waterways are at far more risk from pollution than anything else.

 

cuase they didnt import it with teh correct names etc.... its not only illegal imports but also fraud

 

I am not quite proposing legalising criminal activities as long as they pay their taxes.
Educate the retailer, maybe he is not aware that this is illegal, if he is and still ignores the fact, then hit him with the full force of the law.
