A few weeks ago my Siamese Fighter started to act strange and died a couple of hours later. It is difficult to explain his behavior but the best way to describe it is to say that it looked as if he was falling asleep all the time and then getting stuck to the intake of the HOB filter. I put him in a quarantine tank but he died before I could do anything to help him.
The tank has been up and running for a year or so and i hadn't changed anything and all the water parameters were stable and correct.
I would just like to know if anyone knows what could have happened to him?

He was about 5 months old and I fed him a couple of different foods, some Betta specific one from tetra and the normal flake food, a Pet shop owner also suggested I try a Vegetable flake food with Spirulena from Tetra, so I give him that as well and he seem to love it. As a treat I also fed him Blood worms, but only on weekends. I fed him twice a day, in the mornings and then in the afternoon. Maybe I should add that he was in a community tank with 3 Zebra Danios, 2 red eye tetra and 2 mollies, they all seemed to get along very well and his fins were in great shape so I do not think that the other fish niped at his fins or tormented him.

    Hi Toby

The biggest killer of Bettas in my opinion is overfeeding.
The food you fed are Ok and should not have killed him.

Bettas are very difficult community fish because they are greedy little buggers.
A good regime to follow is feed him once a day, skip at least one day of the week and feed him boiled
peas after the day you skipped.
It is also good to feed him some frozen daphnia to give him some roughage.
Your feeding bloodworms the correct way so no problem there. Some people say the cheapie bloodworms
can however lead to some bacterial diseases.

Having tetras in the tank how strong was the flow? Bettas with there fancy fins are not up the challenge of
swimming in current all the time. They also like a shallower tank because they are labyrinth fish.

    Hope this helped a little.

    Thanx for the info :)
It was my the first Betta I kept so maybe it was just a lack of experience, will keep the feeding in mind. The current wasn't very strong and didn't seem to affect him in any way and he seemed completely happy until the day he died, thats why this just seemed so strange to me, could he have died of some sort of stress or something like that and is dropsy contagious, reason i'm asking, I had a pleco that died of dropsy about a week before the fighter died.

Was the betta very bloated and the scales raised? Kind of looked like a pine-cone

Then most likely it was not dropsy. Was he fully grown when you got him?
They only live for 2 years on average so might have been close to that when you got him.

That may have been it I think because he was already fairly big when I got him
