Use liquid kits. Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are tested for fish-in cycles. PH can be nice to know

Ammonia and nitrite should be 0. Nitrate ideally 0-40

@Ren, I use a Sera test kit which is liquid form, not strips

I have the full kit but you can also but individually what you want to test for

Im not sure what the exact price is at the moment but it does last a long time

Alternatevly, until you get a test kit, all lfs's in our area test for you if you take in a sample. Not sure where you stay?

    Tank is 6 weeks today
My current concoctions to try and keep it all going:
Prime with water changes 2 x weekly do 15 % change Wednesday and 40% weekend
    Daily dose of scape carbon
2 x weekly dose of flourish
Will now add stability with my water changes
Any more suggestions? What do I need to change?

@Ren, all sounds good except Stability is supposed to be daily for 7 days irrespective of water changes.... just check bottle..and double check me..

Other than that, sounds good, so lets hope all goes well now

    Love the rams.

I would add fish after 2 or 3, otherwise the BB has no food

No idea re the septic tanks
    Is that not chemicals?

    The way I see it.
If you are introducing fish from your lfs into your tank without qt, no different to getting some filter media from them.

There where only 5 and I took them all..promises to kids and all..
Does anyone know of a lfs in West rand that has some? PM please...
Know they need numbers to be comfortable

Yes, that is correct for once your tank is up and running and established

These are the directions to start up a new tank and cycle

    Directions
Shake well before use. Turn off UV/ozone. Use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 40 L (10 US gallons) on the first day with a new aquarium. Then use 1 capful for each 80 L (20 US gallons) daily for 7 days. Fish and other aquatic species may be introduced at any time as long as dosage is maintained for 7 days. For optimum biofilter performance use 1 capful for each 80 L (20 US gallons) once a month or with each water change and whenever introducing new fish or whenever medicating an aquarium. Product shelf life is 4 years from date of manufacture, see expiration date below.

Apparently they are more comfortable with5 or more in a group.
I have 9 in my 120cm, and although I hardly ever see them, they are there....

    They had 5 and I took 5
    Lfs helper manhandled them....
Told my wife that I expected casualties..
I use the stability as prescribed...
Did not use it to cycle but used it when adding new fish...

I had a rescue one in a 20l with my betta and it was often in the open and swam to eat pellets on the bottom.
Unfortunately found its way through my overhead outflow, past all the media and into the pump though :(

That sucks. Make sure they are careful next time
