    Hi all,

Well, as promised, here is my new tank set up that I set up over the weekend.

Thanks so much to Solex69 for advising me to take the plants out of their basket and plant direct into substrate. In taking the plants out the baskets I discovered that in each basket I had between 2 to 3 plants. So I was able to spread the plants out a lot more.

Left of the tank is a piece of wood with 2 plants attached to it. Behind is a bunch of plants. In the centre is the rockery with caves inside for fish to hide. To the far right is a piece of granite with holes through it, and a whole lot of plants.

Solex, can you please see if I have planted correctly? Anything else I should do?

Sauron, I've had a look all around the tank... sorry mate, I couldn't find a name on it.

I've also included pictures of the filter in the hood for comments

    And more pics

@zoom - If you don't mind, I'd like to come around maybe this Saturday and come and check out your tank. I'll bring you some more plants....I think I can do some cuttings from one of my other tanks as well. I have to go to Brackenfell, so I'll pop in by you on the way to or from there. PM me to discuss further. We can chat further about your tank

Carl, is it not Limnophila sessiliflora...? Either way, the faster it grows, the better. I'd like to get a lot of plants going. I use to have only plastic plants, but now that I have gone with the real... I cannot even begin to think WHY i spent so much money on the plastic... when the real keeps the tank so much cleaner (nitrates and algae), and the fish appreciate it a lot more.

I've kept a few of the more colourful plastic stuff in until the real stuff really takes off... mostly for colour.

Most LPS keep them. Just watch the prices... maybe phone around a bit to get a general feel. I've found the prices can vary up to R20.00 p plant here in Jhb.

LPS really know how to rip the ring...

    THAT FAST???:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Yep... I'm sure Solex will correct us... although I seem to remember asking him originally.

Didn't put anything under the substrate... I've read that it's not great on the fish (nitrate levels etc). I been recommended to stick a nail into the substrate next to the roots. (?)

I see a lot of fertilizers available from LPS that can be added to the water. Are they any good? Any side effects on the fish?

    Sorry... the tank is 160l Can't remember exact dimensions. (About 1m x 0.4 x 0.6) or thereabouts

the nail thing works on the sword plants, ive only got 2 x 60L tanks due 2 student living quarter restrictions, in my one tank i didnt want 2 put a plant substrate underneath the pool filter sand on the whole botom of the tank, so what i did is, i took flat fist sized rocks and builded "retaining" walls for the normal organic potting soil from nursery inside the tank where i wanted my plants and inside the "rock walls" or i adde about 1 fist or 2fist fulls of potting soil wich i washed with a sif to seperate the floating parts from the sinking parts and plante the plants in it and the covered it with filter sand, the tanks been running since Feb, i have to trim the plants every week, ive got that cabomba carolinia and Giant Hygro, and Amazon Sword, its growing like mad, every 2 weeks or so i ad some seachem organic liquid carbon and maybe some liquid ferts, its a simple setup and it works, but i would realy like to go the ful monty later on a big 2m setup

those fertz from the LPS realy work, especialy with newly planted tanks aparently

Yebo, the bushy plant type in the left-back is Limnophilia Sessiliflora. It is a quick grower. You can use the offcuts again and stick them into the substrate...this is probably one of the easiest plants to propagate

Sjoe, I must've completely misread the location....I thought I was driving to Durbanville :D But I drive very slowly jong....not a speedy driver :)
