Hi all I have a pair of Oscars that are breeding and I have no clue how to work with them now....
firstly the have laid there eggs on a piece of slate in the middle of the tank and there are a lot of them, the eggs colour is a light brow is this right or are all the eggs infertile.

How long before I can do a water change in the tank and how long does it take the fry to become free swimmers?

I am looking into feeding them Decap BSE that I want to order. will this be surfactant or should I feed them something else?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Guys,

Vonkie (jy dop die toets), rule No 1 in fishkeeping, treat the cause and not the symptom (hoeveel keer moet ek nou al weer hierdie preek afstaan, en dan nog aan ouens van Potch vir CHO, asseblief manne) so forget about the fungistop, by using this you are trying to stop the fungus, but there is a reason why the fungus is growing on the eggs. So why?

Although Oscars are tough they come from the Amazon where the water is soft and they need relatively soft water to spawn. They are not nearly as sensitive as discus but they certainly cannot get the eggs to survive in a tank that hardly has any water changes, into which you feed huge amounts of food, in which you have inadequate biological filtration and into which you put hard water from your tap.

For them to breed you need softer unpolluted water. The first thing that I would suggest that you do after this is a huge water change, at least 50% and check that your filters are clean and running well. What are you feeding? Trout pellets or something? If you overfeed the excess food will be food for any fungus that may be in your water and then if your fishes spawn, the fungus attacks the eggs. So you can treat with fungistop, but it will not help.

So, I hope that you understand what I mean, get the tank hygiene right and you will raise oscars, if not, you will get rotten eggs!

    Groete,

    Dirk

Hi Shakester, to answer your Question yes they do and they can cause a lot of harm to each other and any other tank mate. I would suggest that you move the Convict before it is to later.

I have my Oscar in a tank alone and a lot of times I see some new wounds but they seem to recover very quickly.
