Ok so I built this bookshelf a long time ago (solid meranti) and, since I don't have many books or do much reading ..I decided I needed to get some glass and water in there....obviously. 20200617_163936.jpg
    I DIY'ed the aquariums 440mm x 440mm x 450mm deep 6mm glass about 80 litres (cost about R 480 incl silicon each)
Drilled and fitted with 25mm bulkhead, I will be doing an auto waterchange system on the 6 tanks.
    20200616_093943.jpg
The back of the cabinet, black pipe for water supply and the blue PVC for waste water:
    20200522_163908.jpg
I use borehole water for all my tanks so the auto topup water will drip in constantly, I just have to figure out how much water I want to do daily and the waste flows to a sump that I'm going to use to breed snails to feed the puffers ( what better place to breed snails ), then out to the garden.

The idea is to do some breeding, starting with some ancistrous, got these babies yesterday +_ 30mm, standard BNP
    20200618_171419.jpg
    And some Red jewels
    20200618_173614.jpg
Then I am thinking of breeding some apistogramma, and my dark knights, I have 7 of these beauties in my Amazon tank, just have to let them pair up:
    20200618_191151.jpg
Maybe some standard GBR, or golden rams... or I would like to try pea puffers maybe

At the moment I am using sponge filters but I am going to change over to matten filter as soon as I can find some of the right foam...

    That looks awesome!

I take it you don’t have to treat your ground water, but do you dose with anything? Would be a cool next step to see a DIY autodoser...;)

    Wow...where to start?
Those 2 new tanks look awesome, you have some mean DIY skills amongst many other skills. They look professionally done and I love how you’ve scaped them to be almost connected  The BN are beautiful, wish you great success in breeding them.

I knew about your brackish tank and the hillstream tank, and now you casually drop a mention of an Amazon tank too  We need a lot more threads from you!
Will be following the breeding projects etc with great interest

No I don't need to dose anything, but I do enjoy DIY;), my water is a little on the hard side so I add some peat to my tanks / filters, thinking of making some sort of in line peat resivoir for the water to filter through before entering the fishroom? my water has a PH of around 7.4
Loads of fun, but heavy on the tight budget:(....just have to eat less:lol:

PS @GaryG i hope you’re not too mad at me / dissapointed that I chickened out of the hillstream for now, but I’ve been in the hobby for like a year. Literally :)
You have a lot of fish keeping experience including oddball fish so it might seem easy to you!

    He he thanks

On a side note...I wonder if these scrubbing pads would work for a matten filter? It Is about 20mm thick and i can get it in black also

I reckon it would, might just need to be cleaned a little more regularly at that thickness though? Not sure..

Been wondering about appropriate matten densities for a while - that may be a bit too dense?
Great breeding setup, look forward to seeing some fry.

Nice Dark Knight ram - you'll get plenty golden ram fry from them btw. Check out Marco's FB account: https://www.facebook.com/The-Ram-Tank-304342836278714/posts/

    Update time...
I got me some endler guppies and blue dream shrimp for one of these tanks and for the other 3 pea puffers, teeny tiny little things when I got them they were like 5mm long so I only took 3, so small i didn't see them for the first week, and was not sure if they were feeding but luckily the tank was well matured with loads of pond snails of various sizes because I had to chop the bloodworms for them to be able to eat them. I am sorry now that I didn't get more, I think I will try my hand at breeding them now

That's awesome! They're really such cuties aren't they?
If you get the hang of breeding them please share! I want to give it a try too
