Why are you using RO water?

    +1

RO water is dead water. No minerals. Nothing. It's really not good for fresh water tanks. It causes major PH crashes in fresh water tanks. Unless you use 1/3 RO and 2/3 tap water (dechlorinated) it's not a good idea to use just RO.

    Hi Komodo,

You are based in Strand right. The water coming out of your tap is very soft as it is and adding RO water is completely unnecessary. If you put fishes into RO water they will die immediately. As a matter of fact you obviously need to add plant ferts and water hardening components or your plants will not grow at all.

Have you put Chemicult into this palm fibre peat?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Soft water area... No need for RO.

    Point's taken to all above.

I have used R.O mix 50/50 tap in the past and had no problems, used nutrafin plant gro and sera morena with it.

@ Prof. i did use Chemicult with the peat.

I will try to use less R.O this time i just cant seem to trust normal tap water...

    Thanks for the advice

    Hi Komodo,

Glad to hear you used Chemicult!

I stay just up the hill from you in Somerset West and I have the same water running out of the tap. It is better than that in most of CT and I run it directly into my discus tanks and they breed in this water. They NEVER see RO, so what the hell? There is this neverending mania in SA about water at the moment which is really depressing. Bottom line is that you really do not need to worry, all is fine, go right ahead.... Can you tell us why you do not trust normal tap water?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

It's a great looking tank and I like the uneven sand.
But the best part for me is the tank itself...
That long channel on the back glass is genius! You could fill it with sponge or filter floss and it will carry the water to the overflow without taking your fish along.
