    Hi

For carbon I dose Happy Life Happy Carbo at 3ml per 100l daily.

For ferts I dose Prof Dirk's Fertilizer at 10ml per 100l after every water change. So if I take out 120l of water, I dose 12ml.

    Regards

    Hi

Thanks very much. Yeah I am hoping the cardinals will be big enough by the time the scalares are grown out. I know that many people keep cardinals with discus, and they are usually fine if the discus grows up with them. It seems the problems come in when you have grown out discus and then add some small cardinals. They seem to think you are treating them to live food!

    Hi

Here are some picture updates. The first one is a flower bud that started developing on one of my Aponogeton Crispus plants. It is the A. Cripus behind the rock in the centre of the picture. I am quite proud of this - it is my first aquatic flower! Excuse the heater in the background...I know I need to move it but I first need to extend the cable and I just haven't got round to it.

Here is a close-up of said flower. I don't know how long it takes to open. I first noticed this stalk with the closed flower 3 days ago.

Here is a view from the side to show how it grows from the middle of the plant

    And another view

And lastly, Ceratopteris Cornuta growing quite nicely and forming little plantlets on the older leaves. The daughter plants break off after a while and float to the surface. One can then leave them floating until the roots are big enough to plant in the substrate again. Or just leave them floating...

The Riccia really does look awesome, how are you getting it to spread on the gravel, doesn't it need a grid of some sort?

    Riccia Carpet

    Hi

Yes, it does need to be kept down with some inventive measures. It does not root. Have a look at this thread: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=101806

It explains everything. The pearling riccia under the moonlight looks awesome. Mine does not quite pearl as much, perhaps I need CO2... :wondering:

When I get tired of all the Riccia maintenance, and it is probably a matter of "when", not "if", I will try something else. Perhaps moss. But not Java - I want to use Phoenix moss, if I can get hold of it.

Also check out this site for moss info: http://www.aquamoss.net/Fissidens-fontanus/Fissidens-fontanus.htm

Who wants to arrange an import?

I found an old plastic crate in the garage. Was broken anyway, so I cut it up. It really just serves as a frame, because the holes are too big. I had to put some netting over it and then carefully place the riccia over the net. Then I used some more net over the top of the riccia to hold it down, and tied it all up with clear fishing line. So I basically sandwiched the riccia between the nets; tied to a plastic grid to create my shape. After a few days little pieces of riccia starts peaking through the top net, and after a month it looks like the pics I showed you.

Today I had to do some maintenance. At this point there is not much riccia left in between the two nets. Any more growth and pieces start floating to the surface. This has been happening for about a week now so I collected them all on the surface with a fishnet. I took out 2 of the plastic pieced, removed all the riccia, untied the top net and placed the riccia down on the bottom net again. Then I had to tie the top net to hold them in place again.

It is definetely not maintenance free, but it seems I have to do this once a month. I have also thought about ways to make this a little simpler. If I can find a plastic grid with smaller holes that would eliminate the bottom net. Something like the stuff they use for embroidery. But I have to be careful about what I use. It must be safe plastic or nylon. Then I bought a hairnet today and used it as the top netting for the smallest carpet piece - the one in the centre front. It was the bigegst hairnet I could find and it only just fits my smallest piece. However, the advantage is that I don't have to tie the hairnet down, as it comes with an elastic band around the edges. So I just pull it over and all is done. I now need to find somebody that sells really big hairnets. :wondering:

    Regards
    L
