    Hi all
Just found a lot off eggs in my JD tank this afternoon so I thought I would share.

    A few questions:
    1. Are JD's good parents
    2. How long before the eggs become wrigglers
    3. how long before they decide to lay eggs again?

    Now for some Pics.

And here is my male, hiding as usual

I've never kept JDs, but I can answer your third question. Normally, fish spawn when something within their environment 'triggers' them to breed. In the wild, this is normally at the start of the rainy season, when lots of fresh water enters the system, which encourages the insects and other aquatic life to breed. Lot's of clean water and lots of bugs for the fry to feed on makes the parents keen to breed.

In the aquarium, this can be replicated with a good water change (or two) and by feeding the adult pair lots of highly nutritious food, like frozen foods and, if possible, live foods as well. By keeping the water extra clean and the good foods coming, more often than not fish become very eager breeders.

I used the above 'techinique' (if you could call it that) to encourage several different kinds of cichlid to spawn.

Good luck with your eggs and fry :)

Never mind all the eggs were gone this afternoon
I guess the breeding setup is not 100% right for them will have to rethink it tomorrow :wondering:

That's not always the cases - you'll find that a lot of cichlds may eat their eggs or fry the first few times that they spawn. Eventually they'll get it right.

In the meanwhile, you can browse through this site I came across: Jack Dempseys. It's really informative and covers all aspects of JD captive care, including breeding.
