I saw my 2 GMO Danios exhibiting breeding behavior and tried my hand at it. I have a neon pink female and a blue male with very long fins.

    Here are a few of my resultsIMG_20210302_214819.jpg IMG_20210302_214806.jpg IMG_20210302_215221.jpg IMG_20210302_215215.jpg

Well done. Could you describe the breeding process and how the fry were raised.

Guys these are danios. Same as all other danios. egg scatters, fry need infusoria or green water or such like foods.

My question would be are you allowed to breed them? Is there not some sort of patent on these fish? I know that they are available for purchase at stores from time to time.

As far as I understand the law only the method can be patented. Here's an extract from an article. Seeing as these fish are aesthetic creations they can't be patented.

    Patent Exclusions
Inventions which cannot be the subject of a Patent in South Africa…

Exclusions as inventions in terms of the South African Patents Act:
Anything which consists of a discovery; a scientific theory; a mathematical method; a literary; dramatic, musical or artistic work; or any aesthetic creation; a scheme, rule, or method for performing a mental act; playing a game, or doing business; a program for a computer; or the presentation of information, are not considered an invention and can therefore not be patented in terms of the South African Patents Act.

When coming to the scientific formulation to create them I believe there are patents, but the breeding as the same as any other animal and is part of their original Zebra Danio genes so how that can be illegal is a dicey question.

I do believe that if they are advertised as Glowfish Danios then you are infringing on a trade mark because Glowfish is definitely a registered trade mark.

So here starts the long story.

I started with a 100l community tank in Feb 2020. I started getting frustrated that my shrimp did not multiply because they were preyed on by the fish. Then in August 2020 I got 6 15l tanks and a sump for a "steal" and started breeding shrimp out for my community tank.

A week or so after netting some shrimp from the community tank I saw some fry in my shrimp tanks and then started to observe what my fish was doing. After growing out I realized that there was one GMO Danio fry and 2 Glowlight Tetra fry. That is when the whole research and trial and error started.

As you can see in my setup, the community tank is in the center and the breeding tanks are above and below.

I had to modify my overflow for each tank because my first attempt all ended in the sump tragically.

I move the parents from the community tank and then place them in the bottom middle breeder. I don't even split male and female because they are very willing to breed. In this tank I have a margarine tub with a few marbles keeping the moss down. I then rotate this tub 2 times a week. Since I don't have the time or energy to check specifically for eggs this is basically a bit of a gamble.

The tubs are placed in a tank with a reduced in flow to reduce water movement for the first few weeks.

Once they are a bit bigger +- 1month old I move them to another tank with more flow and to stop them from eating the newer fry.

When coming to feeding I use microworms and Hikari first bites and then when they are bigger I add crushed Tetra flakes and crisps. IMG_20210303_154456-01.jpeg IMG_20210303_154542-01.jpeg IMG_20210303_154554-01.jpeg IMG_20210303_154606-01.jpeg IMG_20210303_154613.jpg

Thank you all for the comments. I currently have about 20 that are ready to be introduced to a community tank, 10 free swimming fry and possibly a batch of eggs.

After this success I am planning to attempt to breed the other fish that I already have in my community tank. But on previous occasions it failed. I believe they are stressed and don't like the new environment.

They are, glowlight Danios and tetras, neon tetras, CPD s and panda cories.

    I love any new challenge.

The way you do this is exactly the way I do my cpds although I have 6 breeders and move 6 pairs of fish in and out at a time.

My first fry were a fluke and I took a lot of guidance from your post on the CPD s. I just could not get Spar margarine tubs

    ...

but as they're GMO ... what do they taste like?

    :tt2::lol:

Do the babies just look pink, or do you see any of the male in them?

@Nina_W I am not a fan of sushi and they are a bit small to cook so can't say about the taste. I am still keeping an eye on them but they are a bit small.

The first one is definitely a female and it's seems that some of the small ones are males. Let's see in a few weeks.

Nice to get feedback and that what I post is useful. Glad its working for you. This technique will pretty much work with all egg scattering fish species

Seems danios arent that fussy on the brand of margarine after all :D
