    Hi everyone.

So I have had a comet in my tank by himself and decided today I will get another fish. So I bought a red cap GF. Did the intro process. All was fine but now I see flash ( comet) is pushing the other one around and won't leave him along. What's flash doing? I have a feeling he's trying to mate?? But the poor red cap is so tired.

    Please help

Are they both in the 12 litre tank?

As mentioned before, that is really too small for 1 goldfish, never mind 2.
TBH they need to be returned to the fish shop asap as they will not last long as things are.

As I said it is just temporary. While I wait for my bigger tank to cycle

If the filter in the small tank is cycled, move the media into the filter of the bigger tank, and then move the fish too.

@Reedfish I tested the water of the bigger tank. Very bad... But the small tank had 2 filters one of which I have put into the big tank. Should I put the other one in and move fish over slowly.... Also very exciting. My aunt is giving my her 5 ft tank with cabinet and equipment. Will hopefully collect tomorrow and start cycle asap.... Tank has a sump filter will maybe make that my tropical tank.... And see what the gold fish do, i don't want to keep the gold fish forever so I want to learn and play with them and get the experience to make the tropical tank

Also just out of interest. Is my comet not accepting the red cap and that is the behavior I'm seeing?

@Farren, ideally you should follow @Reedfish's advice and take them back to the lfs....

You shouldnt keep 2 goldfish that size in a 12l tank so you can learn and gain experience... sorry...

If you are determined to keep them then move them to the bigger tank, take the filter media across and buy a bottle of Seachem Stability to dose the tank as per instructions on the bottle.

Your comet is probably trying to defend what little he has for himself and the poor red cap has nowhere to run to in that small tank

@MariaS I have done what @Reedfish and yourself have suggested and moved them to the bigger tank. They seem happier

    @Farren,
Pleased to hear that you followed my advice.
The fish will be happier in the bigger tank temporarily
But a healthy, well looked after goldfish gets to 20+ cm.
So in a short period of time, the 60L will be too small for them.

Look, I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm.
Always good to see new fish keepers. But you can't use some fish that you don't want to learn about fish keeping.
Rather start with a clean slate - an empty tank.
Get some books on fish keeping. Ask questions here on the Forum. And then build up your knowledge that way.
And then see what fish are suitable for the conditions that you can provide, and expand from there.

Excellent that you are getting a 5ft tank.
If you follow my advice and do lots of research before you get the fish, it will bring you lots of enjoyment. If you try and do things back to front, it will be a struggle.
    My 2c anyway.....

    Very good advice.
Don't be afraid to ask questions.
There are no stupid questions, only stupid mistakes.

@Farren, I absolutely agree with Reedfish's advice and its good you asking questions and taking the advice given

    We all mean well..

I know its not always easy to Get good fish specefic books in SA
I tried to get one for my son not long ago and all i could find was tropical fish of southern Africa.. An excellent book but not really what you want

The internet is also a good place to google but unfortunately you get very mixed advice there so I usually read say 10 different websites and see what advice is the more consistent, then ask on the forum... you will always get help

If you cant find a good book, another way to start is to take a drive to various LFS's, write down the names of the fish that catch your attention and then read up on them, their needs and suitable friends...

As for your gold fish... I know its not easy but.. rather take them back and one day if you can build a nice pond, you can always get some
Use the 60l tank for some small tropical fish.. Just my opinion....
