    Hi Slummies,

How long ago did you buy these fish? Why I ask is because their eyes are quite large in relation to their body size. In discus, the eyes will grow even if the body has not and this is an indication of too little food being fed to them. It is possible that the LFS that you purchased them from did not feed them enough or that you are not feeding enough, and not food of the correct nutritional composition. Small discus need to show full tummies just about all the time. These guys need FOOD!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Shame yes, and tubifex worms are also about the worst thing you can do for discus if they are coming from SA sewerage works, and the rest of the diet was also not right. But I am glad that you are moving on to some better fish.

    Hi Scaly,

In terms of colour these fishes look very nice, but they are thin. It looks as though they are not being fed enough. What are you feeding them?

As I commented before, the size of the eyes of a discus give you an indication of their feedings status and it looks like the eyes are again quite large in relation to their size, in other words, they are starting to look stunted. I would be worried if my discus looked like that. How long have you had them?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Prof

Thanks for the comments. These guys have just been introduced (Day 1 when I took the photos). I took a chance and did not put them in Quarantine, as I felt they had been stressed already from the shipping. They are still a bit shy and eating more and more each day. I feed them blood worm twice a day, with a bit of ox heart every other day (they don't seem to like this much, but with time I am sure they will start loving it) I will be feeding them fresh garlic and banana later when their appetite is what it should be. I am sure they just look a bit fatigued from the the import process. I will keep a close eye (no pun intended) and will post pics from time to time.

So interesting observations re tank mates. There was a discuss in the tank already, the same size as the new guys, but he showed an excess amount of aggression toward the new arrivals, he now resides with my Bolivian Rams. Also I had a Spiny eel in the tank, which I had to remove as he was "eating" the Discus slime of the new guys. He never did this with my original discus.

Current tank mates 6 Cardinal, 6 Ottos, 1 Blue Ram, 2 Bronze Corys.

    Thanks and regards

    Vincent
