Thanks guys. Yes they really are growing well and in all honesty, its one of the most rewarding things to see-a pair of Rams with their kids in toe..
The first batch is now a month old and wow they have grown!!!

This is a photo taken this morning.

    Nice planted tank there Marco:p

I really like them when they are slightly older and the yellow starts showing, they look extra spunky then.

    @Vis

Yes I am. Its something an american breeder started a few years ago.
    He coined them "Powder blue".
Ive reached the 2nd generation before but then lost them all.
This is a photo of the end product
    [IMG]

Theres also another goal I have in mind but that will take a few years if at all possible.

    @jpvd007
    Hi Jason,
Mum's not the word but Im not too sure if it is actually feasible at all.
I wish to try and get as red a Ram as possible.
Red body area with the blue scale lining and black spots as per normal.

I have briefly discussed it with @Dirk and will have to see what I can get from each batch and then breed towards the end goal.
The previous time I tried this I actually managed to get the males to have as much red on the flank area as what a female would have in her belly. Unfortunately like I said I lost all the rams but this time I will be more carefull when introducing new blood
The advantage to Rams is that you can see 3 to 4 generations in the span of a year so you get there quickly-its getting exactly what I want which is challenging.
But at least it offers a goal to work towards instead of just aimlessly breeding them.

    Any thoughts?

    Marco

What you need is some eyes to find you a red as possible fish to start with, but then you are introducing new blood again.

    Hi Vis

Yes you are right. I look everytime I see some Rams for any that show lotsa red but its risky as you could easily end up bringing the parasite rubbish along.
Its something I will work on as far as I can within the fish I have but ultimately some new bloid is always needed.

@Marco, Wow they really have grown in leaps and bounds... They are just too cute for words... Yes you can already see a few in the pic that are starting to colour up a bit...

Breeding a Red Ram would be epic... So what are you looking for? A golden with lots of red or a blue with lots of red on it? Are you going to be picking out from your own youngsters to try reach the "Red" strain?

Will definitely be following this with great interest...

I would guess a golden ram with a lot of red will be a big leap in the whole process.

    Hi

Ive learned a word in recent times:
    "xanthochromism"
That is what the geneology related to a Golden Ram is called.
According to what I have learned thus far it is a specific colour form which causes an unusual yellow pigmentation in an animal due to the LACK of normal red pigmentation...
Soooooo-if my understanding is correct the Golden would be negative to achieving a Red fish. But of course this could be wide off the mark as crossing the fish could have an opposite effect.
This is where ideally @Dirk can give me some advise.
If you look at these 2 Rams you can see a difference in the red on the flank
    [IMG]

This is the red I started getting in Rams before. This is a male and the reddish hue on the flank is visible whereas in the Ram above (normal blue ram) it is not. Also note the ventral fins on the fish below compared to the top one. Red vs more yellowish
    [IMG]

Its all possible I believe-achieving it is a whole different story!!!!

    Rgds

I have seen this red flanks in quite a few ram males at times making then very hard to distinguish from the females.
