Please refrain from mentioning, posting Blacklisted species, (or post a copy of your permit!)

Gert they are not just blacklisted but also endangered and indigenous – lots of issues at play here!

    @Gert Combrink

You say this like it is against the rules to discuss BL livestock?

This has got nothing to do with Jenny keeping them just a general reminder.
Yes if someone keeps BL livestock they may NOT discuss keeping, selling, buying or trading with them but CAN discuss their general nature.

PM sent @Marius Swart.... And despite the advertising on the box...(lol) - if you are lucky enough to get anything hatching from those horrid death traps.... Would most likely be some poor grade Fundulopanchax species anyway....

    Hi Jenny,

Which strain of Nothobranchius rachovi are those? It may interest you, but I was implementive in getting the so-called N rachovi Beira 98 strain established worldwide as all of the original fishes caught in the wild were sent to me. I then fed them back into condition and then shipped to Canada from here and they got to the rest of the world from there.

The whole issue of this species being blacklisted is now no longer relevant as this species does not occur on South Africa. It was thought to occur in the Kruger National Park, but that specific strain has now been renamed Nothobranchius pienaari, so N rachovi occurs in Mozambique and the reason for blacklisting it, which was because it occurs in SA, is no longer valid, so please guys can we have some leeway here.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Im sure if you had kept those fish for yourself then you could've made quite a bit of money. The Thailand fish farms are making a lot from selling the Beira 98 strain worldwide.

    Hi Mitchell,

About 100 males and 100 females of this species were caught by someone near Beira in 1998. They were then stored in holding tanks without feeding for two weeks in Beira and were then bagged and put into a big truck that literally drove from Beira to Bloemfontein where they were off-loaded to a friend. He was unable to look after them and put them on the plane to me straight away. When they reached me they had not been fed for 4 weeks and were about dead. I put them into large tanks in my discus system, males and females separately, and fed them with high quality frozen bloodworms and brineshrimps and they regained their condition in about three weeks after which I bagged them individually and had them flown to Prof Brain Watters, an ex South African, who was a professor of geology in Saskatchewan University in Canada. They arrived in good shape and were then distributed at the next American Killifish Association meeting and from there they hit the world. So every single N rachovi Beira 98 fish has ancestors that swam through my tanks wayback.

So, no, I have not made any money, but every time I see the name, I know where the fishes came from and I am proud of that, no regrets there even if I missed my first million.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

In my opinion these are the most popular Notho's, they compare in popularity to Fp. Gardneri. I still like my N. Kilomberoensis better though :p

I think the blacklist needs to be updated quickly. If they don't change it then a lot of people might accidently order 'Nothobranchius pienaari' eggs and think it is legal, because it is not listed on the blacklist.
Also people will stay away from Nothobranchius rachovii thinking it is blacklisted, because... it is listed on the blacklist.

On Ebay and I believe Aquabid aswell, they are still sold as N. Rachovii "Kruger National Park" black. Some breeders are now selling them as N. Pienaari but its still easy to mix up your blacklisted specie's.
