Yes very frustrating. I am slowly adding more plants, but there are not many variations at the local pet shop, so have to wait for the new stock. Got two new ones yesterday and an apple snail and a small ancistrus which will hopefully make a difference. Want to get some shrimp too but they R30 each.
Also going to start dosing ferts again properly. I have most of the seachem range but do i still need to add the excel if i have Co2 running?

Nope, excel is also a carbon source, so one or the other. It's very important to have stability in the tank. Dosing should be consistent, as should the CO2 level. Your best fish for algae in my opinion are Siamese algae eaters.

I started dosing today as yesterday was water change day. Also bought another plant today so hopefully stocking up on plants may help. These are some pics

Excell can help against algae, just by dosing or spot treating.

You do not have that much plants yet so go slow on dosing anything.

Also try the Scape products as the are much cheaper then seachem.

This is not my understanding Broder...from what I gather...adding co2 to a system helps plants extract carbon from their surroundings...by adding Excel you are feeding the plants carbon directly this means they can then focus that energy on growth instead of processes used to extract carbon. Excel also has trace elements required by plants which are beneficial. So although it is not necessary to do both it is not redundant. :)

Wish my SAE was a pro algae eater...he just seems to bully my other fish :(

So I was totally losing my cool with the Algae and nothing was helping. So I did a 50% water change. Spot treated most of the Algae with Excel and rearranged my plants somewhat.

Hi Deem, your tank is coming along nicely. I recently had a major BBA (black brush algae) outbreak which was due to inconsistent CO2 (co2 fluctuations). If you're using pressurised CO2, keep it as stable as you possibly can. It is a pain in the behind and will usually attach to rocks, wood and slow growing plants such as the anubias.

Fish - not sure, looks like bristlenose ancistrus (can you take a close up?)

    Plants:
    1 - Limnophila Sessiliflora
    2 - Pogostemon Stellatus (?)
3 - unsure, looks like it is an echinodorus or a cryptocoryne
    4 - Hygrophila Difformis
    5 - Rotala Rotundifolia
    6 - Bacopa Monieri (I think)

Very nice Deem :) Trim the stems plants and replant the trimmings to help fill out the gaps.
